How to skip magnetic weapons?
Does anyone know how one can skip magnetic weapons and get the plasma weapons/elerium and tier 3 armor research rushed?

You need to unlock the elerium research, the only way to skip magnetic is to unlock plated armor. To start the research you need alloy, to get alloy you need to be successful on the first raid mission in the game.
Another option is to raid an ufo or buy the alloy from the black market. Neither of these options are available early in the game.
The last resort is to cheat or mod the research to be equal to magnetic weapons.

Unlocked plated armor but the elerium research didn't show up on my previous playthrough. Yesterday, the new patch came as well as the alien hunter DLC for linux so I've started a new save. It's going to be interesting to see if it works this time around :-)

Pretty sure Elerium needs both Plated Armor and Magnetic Weapons.
I mean, you could research Magnetic and then not build them... but unless you're going for a challenge run or something there REALLY is no reason to do that.

In my Commander game I'm playing, I only built two of the magnetic weapons (minigun and shotgun) and skipped the rest. (Well, and I did the DLC weapon upgrades.) But, money is too tight for the full upgrade. I had plasma weapons available before I could afford to upgrade more of the magnetic weapons.

I'm sure part of the issue is that I'm not playing optimally, but I have almost all of the plasma at this point (except the plasma rifle and pistol) and skipped the majority of magnetic. It didn't really feel like I was playing at a harder difficulty though, since only 1-2 members of the squad were running the standard balastics.

On Veteran difficulty (or lower), I can't imagine needing to skip magnetic due to funds.

Just finished the elerium research yesterday, on the third difficulty setting. Got in a bit of a pinch, suddenly 3 blocks added to the avatar project, and then the coundown timer started, then I 3 missions in short succession before i can hit the blacksite to reset the timer, with a fully shaken 6 people squad. That was not fun, with stock equipment.

Xcom2: convential, magnetic, plasma.
2 upgrades, 3 tiers

Xcom: EW: convential, laser, Light plasma, Heavy plasma.
(Light plasma required to salvage weapons from enemy corpses)
3 upgrades, 4 tiers

Xcom: Long War: convential, convential upgrade: alloy rounds, laser, magnetic, pulse and plasma.
5 upgrades , 6 tiers

Makes no sense to skip Magnetic weapons. This isn't UFO: Defense or Terror from the Deep.

If you want to skip someting - skip Plated armor. You can get away with it on Commander easily.

You can skip it because armor in xcom2 sucks
