How do i unlock more armor in xcom 2?

I have played xcom 2 for about 28 hours and so far in my latest gamesave i have unlocked preadator armor but nothing despite it saying earlier on that i had discovered several other armor types which i can't remember, which i apparently unlocked after researching i think it was "Plated Armor". It came up with several pages, pictures, V.O descriptions and writting of several different armors including the preadator which i could then build straight away and another which had a grappling hook based off the skeleton armor from xcom enemy unknown. I have no more armor research option, nor can i build the new armors so where did they go?? Why did they even show me them in the first place with detailed descriptions if i haven't even actually got them yet or even know about them?? I'm confused.

Well, the basic armor upgrades, (predator and Tier3 armor) are bought from the engineering and buying them once gives them to every soldier. The E.X.O and other special armors are Proving Grounds projects, each of which gives you a single set of that specific armor.

In your ship - Engineering > Build items > Armour > Upgrade Armour

The Spider Suit and EXO Suit are not squad-wide upgrades in the same way as Predator Armour, they are experimental items that you have to build one at a time in the Proving Grounds (after you've researched and built that room).

It's not particularly well explained in-game so you're not the first person to get confused. ;)

Plated Vest is an armor underlay you can randomly get out of the "experimental armor" task in proving grounds, amongst other underlays, there are several others.

EXO suits are specifically created via EXO suit task in proving grounds: you need to create them individually unlike game-wide upgrades like predator armor.

Spider suit (similar to skeleton suit from the previous game) works the same as EXO: proving ground project, individual item.

There's also some specific armors you can get out of the alien hunter's DLC, which are more or less unique items.

Not very good advice.
There's a good deal of time between being able to make the tier 2 and the tier 3, and frankly the tier 3s aren't all that much better than the tier 2s.
The additional protection is of limited concern compared to the abilities the armors give you, but the tier 3s give very little in the way of abilities compared to the tier 2s. The reason for both Spider and Wraith armors is the +mobility and the grappling hook. Wraith gives more +mobility, but the grapple is the same and Wraith Form is of limited use. The EXO and WAR are for the heavy weapon slot, not the protection, and WAR's ability is the worst ability in the game. The main reason to build a WAR is to unlock Experimental Powered Heavy Weapon, which despite requiring the WAR to create them, can be used by EXO as well.

Unless you meant, if both are available, to make the tier 3s. Which is pretty obvious.

you need to build the proving grounds facility in the avenger to make the exo suit,spider suit,W.A.R suit and wraith suit and the experimental ammo and grenades wich is where your elirioum cores will come in handy (they are really rare so do your best to spend them well)

altought i would recomend you waiting to unlock the war and wraith suit as they are better in every way than the other two and there is no way to convert them or get your cores back from them but you can still go for it if your wish
