They're only npcs and not playable characters. The only way to save them is to not play the tutorial.
Which is how the soldiers die in 1 hit despite it being impossible for the enemies to actually do so.
The soldiers have 5 hp. Advent trooper rifles do 3 damage, +1 on crit, which means that the flanked guy would've had 1 health left from being crit. The guy that got shot in cover was shot by a captain, which does 3-4 damage, and has no crit chance, therefore could not have killed him either.

No crit CHANCE. The soldier wasn't flanked, so it could not have landed a crit. And before you talk about Commander, everything in the tutorial is a rookie/veteran scale unit, since your rookies have 5hp instead of 4 and the troopers have 3hp instead of 4.
