Report a translation problem
The scanners only reveal an area around them for the turn they are used after which you need to try and come up with another plan (and/or adjust the ones you have) based on what they revealed.
*Edit* This is also part of the reason the games balancing gives you two uses of them per item and they only use one action point to throw without ending that soldiers turn.
They lasted for a few rounds in XCOM Enemy Unknown/Within if you've ever played those, might be thinking of that
