Yes, you have to choose.
I say it is not advanced because that is what the game says for the tooltip when I mouse over the locked item slot icon. It looks like you believe it is advanced gear as well. Thus my being mystified.
Not pressed for gear...was just looking for as much boom as I could carry.
Personally I would recommend to give these suits to your grenadier that you have been training up in the later abilities of the Demolition Expert line. As all their abilities that work with grenades also work with the heavy weapons.
Also once you build one of these suits you unlock a new option in the Proving Ground that lets you build new types on heavy weapons that can be swapped out with the default rocket launcher.
I can get more rockets/better rocket launchers? I researched it again, got the flamethrower, and was like "♥♥♥♥ that".
What I didn't mention was simnply that like the normal armor, these suits also have a final form. One guess what that means for the weapons.
And yeah the flamethrower is, to put it politely, not what it was in the last game.
It has a very niche use against Rulers if you don't have any other way to set them on fire, but that is about it.
Of the basic heavy weapons there's only one that isn't that good. I think you can guess which.
For the next tier up if you want all the boom there's one that is sometimes called by people on this forum as the "♥♥♥♥ Everything In This Cardinal Direction Cannon!".
And no, it's not the blaster. If anything is still standing after that be sure to give (what is left of) them a round of applause.
There's also another that at first glance will look even worse than the flame thrower. Right up until you give one to a SPARK with the Rainmaker ability.
Incoming Flamethrower rant here. I'm not as down on the basic flamethrower attachment as Amanoob, but by the time WAR suit comes out it's useless, especially on Legendary where the enemies just don't notice it. And for some reason the Burning effect % isn't that high on organic foes. It's a good harassment technique against charging enemies in vanilla, but that's about it. Yeah, the FT itself has a low burn rate, but the 'Lid or Berserker that runs through a blazing hex is 100% afflicted.
Rant addendum, in Long War 2 the Technical's flamethrower is worth using because:
1. The Technical starts with it, and in early game the organic enemies are charcoal.
2. There is a skill tree for FT use that makes developing a firebug useful.
3. The tier FT upgrades improve damage to keep it viable with rockets and grenades.
I equipped a hellfire projector on my Spark last campaign in a mission with Lost and nearly died laughing when he crit a whole pack for 20+ damage each. Lost are vulnerable to fire anyway, so it was totally unnecessary. But hilarious.
