XCOM 2
WOTC: Character Pool Export
Basically, trying to export one campaign's soldiers into character pool so I can still get them for the new campaign. But, surprise surprise, I cant do so for some reason, like the entire Character Pool system is bugged.

1. Can't export soldiers into a character pool.
2. Have to manually make pools in the folder itself, as the game says it makes them but really doesn't. I also have to restart the game anyhow just for the said manually created pools to appear in the list.
3. Cannot delete/make pools from ingame. I.E the Developer Pool.

Those are the main problems so far with me. I've already looked over other discussions relating to the pools, both here and on Google, Reddit, and other such places, but their almost always about transfers from Vanilla to WOTC, yet mine is still in the same version- (WOTC to WOTC) -so they don't help.

You don't need to export characters to your character pool if you're in the same version. Just save to character pool from the armory.

Assuming you created your characters in game (or are using game-generated ones), you just go into your latest save, go into your armory, go into character info for each soldier, and in the first section (where you can edit their name) at the bottom you can Save to Character Pool. Then they'll automatically be there for your next campaign.

Well, I did that too, though when I reload the game, they're not showing up. Hence why I'm trying the export thing; To make sure they save.

you have the game set to using characters from the character pool right?

the game will also include randomly generated soldiers if you either have too small a pool, or have it set to be a mix. might need to wait a bit to find them.

I do have it on that. But that's the thing, I'm trying to get them into a pool to begin with.

Sounds like some sort of admin/write permission issue on your pc, try running the game as admin. Also check your DefaultCharacterPool.bin in documents isnt set to read only.

Make sure your Documents folder doesn't use OneDrive or similar on it because it screws with a lot of things including properly saving data. Had an issue when I first had XCOM 2 (vanilla) and I could never got it to save anything until I got OneDrive access entirely removed.

And... how does one do that? I don't think OneDrive is active on there, as while I do have it on my computer I almost never log into it as I have to re-log into it each time I restart. But, you know, better safe than sorry.

I did try your suggestion, and sadly it didn't work. As for the .bin file you mentioned, it was not a bin but a .TLE file for some reason... Same name though, but it was only for WOTC instead of both it and Vanilla, unless if that is supposed to happen.

Just uninstall OneDrive if it is there. Simple as that.

Well, did it. Still no luck when I tried it.
At least I didnt even need OneDrive. Couldn't figure it out for the life of me, and I have so little use for it anyhow.

That sounds wrong, c&p that file and rename the TLE extension back to .bin and try again.
The fact that its changed seems like you have some iso/backup software or something take control of .bin file associations.

In your character pool, are they set to come in as Rookie or are they set to specific soldier types? This is just a theory because I've never tested it (my pool are all set to come in as rookies), but I think they need to be set to come in as Rookie to show up as your starter pool. Otherwise they will come in as scan rewards or mission rewards because they need to be promoted soldiers of at least Squaddie level.

Yea, I thought something was wrong with the file, Never heard of a .TLE before. But, you know, might as well make sure.

I dont really think that's how the pool works, as it's really just the cosmetics and info being saved. All the items they have, I.E a Skulljack, doesn't get saved. Plus, there is no-way to set ranks if I'm correct. Only classes, I.E a Ranger.
megansweden Apr 23, 2021 @ 11:31pm
No, not ranks. But you can set a specific class and if you save them to character pool from the armory I think it saves the class they have at the time. Since everyone in your starting armory starts as Rookies, if you have no one set as Rookie in your character pool you will get randomly generated characters.

If you go into Character Pool from the main menu -- on the starting screen where you can start a new game or load a save, there's an option for Character Pool, I don't mean within an active game in the armory. If you click on that and it's empty, then you have no character pool, they haven't saved. If your characters are there, select one of them and check if they have a specified class. Try setting a few of them to "Rookie" as soldier class, start a new game, and see if they show up on Gatecrasher.

(Sorry I can't figure out how to post a screenshot, I'm a noob to these boards).

Well, several things there.
1. You can't put screenshots, unless if it's a Steam Images link I believe. You can put other website links, but only Steam Links show a preview.
2. That "Class" slection in the character pool just has the "View As" thing, it doesnt do anything else but seeing the character as that class, unless if you have a mod to make the said class a priority after Gatecrasher. They still show up otherwise.

And 3, with:

That's the problem I'm having now. They do show up there, but only if I manually save them from a loaded game. Rebooting the game seems to delete those, and not save them to a Character Pool, like I'm trying to do to prevent that.

Well, it seems to worked partially, as I can finally save soldier's appearances.
However, the problem with the character pools themselves persists as I still cannot make/remove pools except by going into the files to do that, nor can I add soldiers to an existing pool.

I'm not sure WHY the .bin was changed into a .TLE, but at least it was an easy fix on that part. Still not really done yet though due to the problem with the pools themselves...
