Delete the config folder in the documents path and then verify game files. This will reset your settings though.

using AV software? Avast maybe?

for me it also frequently freezes, but always only on the geosphere. it has nothing to do with the avatar project starting in my case, it just seems to freeze on the geosphere randomly, quite a lot (it hangs and becomes unresponsive, so i have to close it in process manager, it isn't a direct crash). i wonder if it's connected to your issue. i haven't found a solution yet though (looking for one on these forums, that's the reason i'm here)

try disabling your av for once and see if there are still hangs. This is mostly related to covert ops.

in my case at least i actually have no antivirus installed. i used to use antiviruses years ago but found they were more trouble than they were worth--even mcafee (the founder of the anti-virus company of the same name) says he doesn't use modern mcafee or modern anti-viruses at all.

reading in these forums i have seen people say that sometimes this can happen if the game is installed on a different hard drive than steam itself is. i have multiple hard drives and installed xcom 2 on a tertiary drive, which is not where steam is installed, so that could be the cause. i'll try reinstalling it on the steam directory drive to see if that fixes it. though that is a pain since it's about 70gb and reinstalling 70gb can take all day.

you might check write permissions on you documents folder and the folders Xcom is installed to.

that is possible, but the bug only suddenly appeared after i bought this dlc expansion, it didn't exist and worked fine without this dlc. and if i play without the dlc it doesn't happen. and my permissions didn't change since then. but i'll give it a check anyway. but to me it sounds like it's just a release bug with a new dlc; often when games or dlc are first released there are bugs that need fixing after a few patches.

but Wotc has several features that write onto the disc the vanilla version did not have.

Has anyone figured out a solution? I'm having a similar issue here.
