How does the ultrasonic lure work?
I thought that you placed the lure to draw all lost within it's radius. I assumed they would move towards the lure. That seems to be incorrect, given the squad wipe I just experienced when the dozen lost in the radius all attacked my people instead of the lure.

Second squad wipe this game, owing to not understanding how certain mechanics now work, and it's probably campaign over. I guess these are the risks of playing ironman without understanding the mechanics.

Anyway, can anyone clarify how this thing works?

Essentially it's a lost bait grenade. All targets in the blast radius become priority targets for the lost. It attracts lost from the entire map
Toss it on to advent and the lost will go and attack them.

But it doesn't stop them attacking your own people if they're outside the lure radius? That's what surprised me. I placed the lure so it covered the dozen lost in it's radius, and didn't cover any of my people. But the lost inside ignored the lure and still attacked my people.

think about it as if you were throwing a can of red paint onto someone else while an enraged bull is coming toward you both.

It lures them into attacking whoever is within the radius of the lure (losts aren't viable targets) so you gotta throw it at ADVENT

Hmm, ok, I misunderstood it. I thought they would head towards the lure. Will remember next time.

It certainly will never make the Lost attack one another. It makes them attack any alien (including ADVENT) or XCOM unit in the area of effect.

Yes, I wasn't thinking it would do that, SamBC, just that it would attract them to the centre of the lure in preference for any target.

Actually if you throw it where there are no "Lost Targetable Units" (LTU) it will draw more lost the same as a grenade thrown there (ie you get more lost on the map). I've used a thrown lure before finding the Advent to generate more lost on the map and then another lure on the Advent once found to drag all the previously generated lost to them.

Most pathetic thing I've ever seen was a Heavy Mech that I had stripped the armor from surrounded by 20+ lost trying to get to him as he took about 2 - 4 damage a turn and killed one or two lost.

Seems to match what I saw on my side:
-No units in radius will spawn an horde.
-Units in radius will be targetted as high priority.
-The "targetting preference" seems to be kept for current lost but seems new ones will not be affected.
-A lure will automatically make all lost from the map move towards it.

Good example of how I use it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjbUzWHDys0

I don't have time to watch a 41 minute video to see how a lure works - wish your link mentioned what time stamp you actually use the lure. BTW I know I'm three years late to the party, but I'm using a lure for the first time and just realized I'm doing it wrong.

simple spoken you throw it at the area with the units you want to get attacked, all inside the blast radius get taked as main targets for most lost present at that time. onetimes they chased a muton over half the map, even 4 turns after i tossed the nade at him.
