XCOM 2
{Awnsered} Cross platform multiplayer?
Heya! I saw that on the store page for this game there is crossplatform multiplayer? I'm aware that the multiplayer in this game isn't as great as it could have been but i'd love to know how i can play crossplatform with one of my friends since they have the game but on xbox.

I'd call Fortnite a major game. They found cross platform play between consoles, PCs and phones so easy that they enabled it by mistake[www.kotaku.com.au]. The major hurdle for crossplay at the time was that Sony didn't want it.

Unwilling companies is really the main reason. Balance issues are another.

Cross platform play just requires that all versions of the game use the same protocols for communication in multiplayer. Which is easily done, as it just means not going to the effort of writing different communication protocols.

Well, it also requires that the only differences between the versions is purely visual, but in this day and age that's perfectly achievable.

Sorry, but no.

"Cross Platform Multiplayer" does not include console versions, ever.

It's about cross-compatibility between the 'major' PC systems, namely Windows, Mac and Linux.

Console versions often differ in some respects (I believe mainly due to the fact that every console type does things very different with hardware and the software that controls it, from console to another and especially to PC), so you cannot expect PS4 to Xbox to PC gameplay.
PC is more 'easy' because while the OS itself is different, the underlying functions and the hardware are basically the same, so it's more feasible to program cross-platform functions.
That's my impression, anyway, might be wrong.

That being said, "Cross Platform Multiplayer" isn't all it's cracked up to be in many cases because updates for different OS' can come at different times, often days apart if you are lucky, or even weeks and months if you are unlucky, so there are (in many games that I have experienced, no idea about Xcom2) generally long stretches of time where it just doesn't work due to version differences.

But just to drive the point home, "Cross Platform Multiplayer" never includes consoles as a rule of thumb.
I do not claim that there are no games that CAN do that, but to my knowledge there aren't.
Edit: At least no major games, might be some homebrew or indie games, not sure.
Hey dude i'm replying from my actual steam account and i wanna say thank you for the info! appreciate it alot

Sure, crossplay has existed for much longer on other titles. I'm not claiming that Fortnite was anywhere near first. Just the only example that comes to mind of it happening accidently.

One of the requirements for crossplat for non-Steam platforms is not using Steam as the platform for getting players together.

Well i mean maybe in the future Steam. Or should i say Valve could work together with other companies like Microsoft ect to make it possible by maybe making it so you can connect your Xbox live account to steam. But for now yeah you're right.
