How to git gud
I'm a save scumming noob. I've restarted my file a couple times due to inactivity and failing missions about 30 hours into the game. Maybe I didn't do criticle missions in time or something... pls halp

well, i've decided to just not save scum any more! If a soldier dies, I will memorialize them in honor! because that's what this game is about... fighting with honor in the midst of defeat.

You have potential.

You have the gift.

You can become a Jedi Master.

You follow the real path of the warrior.

Im proud of your strength and I salute you.

I know it is hard (it took me many ragequit campaigns to change my mind) but there is nothing wrong with abandoning a mission if it is roo risky. For instance, in my current campaign I evacuated from lost city as soon as an assassin appeared becaused it might one-shot my already wounded soldier. In another mission I took 2 crates and immediately evacuated (2 pods were active, remaining crates were behind them)

If you are still learning the game, you may want to slow down both tactical and strategic timers in options before starting campaign.

Oh I didn't know this was an option. Nice one!

1. Dont save sum. It seriously holds you back from improving.

2. Check out all the threads on Steam about how to do Classic difficulty. They have really good advice that applies on every difficulty.

3. Remember dieing and losing is part of the game. It really makes those successes worth it. A few missions here and there wont cost you a campaign.

What I like to do when learning the game is save at the start of the mission. Also save when the council gives more credit.

That way if things go south you've got a fallback position while learning the game.
Redoing missions when new monster shows up allows you to try different tactics in a known environment.

As long as you've got soldiers who can fight, even a failed mission isn't bad as you soldiers stain gain XP and research continues.

Stick with and have fun. Whilst it can be tense at times, it's all worthwhile when you break through.

Xcom 2 is a game where you learn by doing mistakes.

I have nothing agains people who savescum but i would recomend to atleast try to break the habit as some one else mentiones it holds you back from learning.

If you do a mistake and just reload 1 min back, you will probably not feel the mistake as bad as it actually is meaning you probably learn almost nothing from it.

Imagine if you spent 3 hours into a campain and then comes a new enemy that just whipe the team, then it will feel as a big mistake and next time you will remember it and do everything to prepare for it just to not lose again.

For me losing 3 hours for a campaign was main reason to use saves, especially the ones before missions so I could adapt to what was coming.
OP, I really recommend you "Yet another F1" mod as it allows you to see monster abilities so you will be less surprised by every new monster.

For me it never felt bad to restart cause it wasnt really that much about pregression for me. It was more about getting good in missions and understanding the dynamics. Never bothered me to restart when I failed. And after I tried out ironman once I was hooked anyway and couldnt go back. I need the excitement to risk game over all the time with every choice I make. Otherwise its just too boring and I loose interest and ont play anymore.

I have just 1 win in 290 hours so if I can decrease number of restarts, I go for it :) But yes, I understand what you mean with losing interest.

Wow these are good tips! Would you recommend Iron Man mode then? I guess what I really enjoy about this game is, even after starting new campaigns, the game doesn't feel repetitive. It's like a more complicated version of chess.

Ironman if there wasn't a chance for saving errors. Play honestman or bronzeman. I had a save where the game reached a limit of turns. No matter what you do the game crashed at X number of turns. But it has to to with the engine who wasn't made for turnbased games. Unreal engine was solely made for first person shooters. Ironman or not, it's better to have a backup in case of emergency.

A basic key tactic is to always look for High Cover for all your moves.

Even if the enemy is behind you?

The only enemy that should ever be behind you is the Codex, which doesn't care about your cover because it will just teleport into a flanking position.
