"Input Device" is greyed out

I used to be able to switch between KB+M and Controller at the main menu, but lately the "Input Device" option is greyed out. I've tried everything I can think of: restarting the game with the controller turned off and saving in KB+M then restarting with the controller turned on, deleting the profile file, using the big picture mode support to register the controller, using InputMapper to register the controller, restarting the computer, launching from Steam with and without mods, launching from the Alternative Mod Launcher with and without mods...

With the controller on, there's partial support; I don't get any controller prompts, but I can navigate menus, tab between soldiers, move the camera, and set overwatch, but I can't move the movement cursor, zoom out, tab between actions.

I recently got a Steam Link, and I'm supposed to be having friends over to hotseat a legendary playthrough and I'll have to cancel it if I can't get the controller working.

You need to mess with the Steam config for the controller, not the game config, so that Steam lets it just act as an XBOX controller, rather than trying to make it act like a Steam Controller.

Hmm. When I use InputMapper, it (my DS4 controller) is registered as an XBOX 360 controller under the big picture mode controller settings. I've tried with all the boxes checked, with just the PS4 and XBOX boxes checked, with just the PS4 box checked, and with just the XBOX controller checked.

Is there some way to force Steam to see it as an XBOX controller that I don't know about?

I don't know - I know the high-level summary, but I've never used an XBOX controller on PC.

I was having the same issue, found the solution: Click with the right button on XCOM2, edit steam controller configuration and reset it to gamepad. When you reopen the game, it will reenable the input type. Just to be sure, disable also any steam controller configs on steam settings.
