Iron man save just deleted itself.
Game crashed very, very deep into my first ironman playthrough on a chosen stronghold. Save deleted itself no way of getting it back is there? :/ </3

Dont know if to chinese burn myself or just never touch ironman anymore. At least 50+ hours sunk into it too any help or nahhh?
This is why I play honestman

If it's not in the save folder then no, I don't think there's a way to recover it

Personally even when playing ironman I make a physical backup of my save game at the beginning of each in game month. Not to cheat with, but simply because the game is too buggy and stuff like this can happen (among many other game breaking bugs)

Being honest with yourself to not cheat while still having a backup to guard against game bugs is far less frustrating than trusting the game to not screw up occasionally

Today was the first and only time this happend to me too. Was early game of an ironman run. game crashed in the tunnels. Save game gone. Just vanished. Some demon from hell stole it and pulled it down into the deepest part of hell. Took all my brave soldiers along and they in hell too now. Its a tragedy.
But funny, how a save game just vanishes. Not even sure if I have ever experienced taht in other games. I might have but if it happened then it was a long time ago. Save game just ceased to exist.

Ironman deletes save games each turn, it's part of what makes it ironman

If it crashes before putting down the new save, of course it will be gone

That's the actual structure of ironman, it deletes your save every turn like clockwork by design

That it happened to crash and bug out before laying down the next turns save point is the glitch, but the old save point being gone is expected behavior

Pretty stupid considering how many times the game likes to randomly crash between turns, dont think im touching iron man mode again for a good six month and if i do im just gonna rush it instead of taking my sweet time on all the chosen.

The last time I did a legendary ironman run I had at least 3 major game glitch/crash issues that would have prevented me from finishing it

I've made a habit of manually copying a save file at the beginning of each game month, open your save location and copy it to a backup folder

As long as you don't abuse this and don't use it for casual reloading you can keep your honor in tact playing ironman properly but without as much risk of having the game screw you over with random glitches

I don't mind losing due to my own mistakes, but I'm not going to let the game waste 50 hours of my time with a crash/glitch

It's a longshot, but you could try using some data recovery software. They are after all made to do just that - recover deleted files. If no data has been repeatedly written over your save file since it disappeared, it should be possible to recover it.
Try for example Recuva - it's free and fairly good.

I apologize for reviving an old post, but this makes so much sense. Thank you for describing it this way. I just lost my ironman save as well and i went from frustrated and irritated to "ooooh. makes sense" and being fine restarting as "honestman" as someone mentioned.

I just wanted to say thank you, it made a difference in how i will experience the next save and probably save me many hours of gameplay and frustrations in the future c:

Haven't touched ironman since I had much the same happen all the way back in Xcom EU, more than once.
Been a staunch (mostly :steammocking:) honestman player ever since.

I was 95% complete a legendary Ironman run and there was no way I was going to lose because of how easy everything was and the game froze when I overwatched and it deleted the save file.

So I dont Ironman games.

And before anyone comes in with the "just back up your saves before every play manually bro", then it's no longer Ironman, and I might as well just play normally. Because either way requires I use willpower to not reload if I screw up and die. One takes 30 seconds more of work to reload, but that's nothing.

The option exists either way and it's always willpower. It's really not that hard to make backups and then only use them if the game is at fault and not you.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
