I think it's actually a little generous, like 3-4 tiles. That said, that's immune to a class of attack, not the range, so you should be fine being adjacent as long as you're using your gun and not your sword.

But the sword is much cooler~

Get a shotgun, run right into sword range, shoot the chosen in its face. Problem solved.

Pathetic damage, no crit, you get to reveal 3 more pods when dashing over to miss that attack on that sectoid leaving you completely out of cover, and you get to be the idiot running around with a knife in a gunfight. Thwords are the lamest thing to happen to XCOM EU's Assault class.

With bladestorm, a decent sword and some other perks and carefull planing, a swordsman is a killing machine!

Scout ahead, dash with the swordsman to an sectoid, kill him with one blow, and stand in the middle of enemeys, cutting them down and parrying every attack.

To the OP, everything that shoot no projectiles is counted as melee attack.
Sword
Claw of skirmisher
Muton melee attack
Attack of Lost
Attack of PSI Zombies
etc.

Certainly isn't a killing machine against a melee-immune Chosen, as per OP.
