Soldier Uniformity
I make all of my soldiers men typically from germany (Because Germany's awesome they have the coolest sounding soldiers)
Give them the exact same uniform, helmet and camo scheme until they're a LT or Higher

Anyone else do this or just go the traditional route of making their soldiers look as edgy as possible?

Half my soldiers are humanized MLP characters. Some of them are the specific character that some amazing person has created a mod for (such as 2B). Some are my creation to match an awesome voice pack, like the Joker. Some are random shmucks who just happened to appear in a look I like. Some are 'standard' XCOM soldiers. And some are dead from too much plasma exposure.

I start out with makeing all my soldiers look the same (Usually one of the green colors and the same armor optimisations, sometimes i start the game by makeing them all look like civilians to get the whole "rag tag team of freedom fighters" feeling).

After they get a class i tend to make some changes (I like my specialists spec'ed as medics with white armor color and my units specialized in concealment in black dull armor, etc) and i like to use different helmets for different classes.

Once they start getting high rank i give them additional customisation, i often try to fit it to their character (As in, someone with a huge killcount might be covered in blood splatters, a ranger that often picks up alien tech might receive a looted advent stun lancer helmet, etc).

Late game i sometimes put togheter teams with different customisations (For example "red" team that all have a red line at the same place).

I don't bother customising rookies, but if they survive to squaddie they get their head shaved and accessories removed and get the stardard issue dark grey uniform.

I make each of my soldiers look as different as possible so I can tell who is who easily from a distance.

Classes have colours though. Once someone gets above rookie...

Green is Ranger.
Yellow is grenadier.
Orange is Psi.
Brown is reaper.
Tan is Templar.
Red is skirmisher
Blue is specialist.
Pink is sniper.

I downloaded various asset packs so I could give them unique hats to tell them apart easily or very different hair.

So essentially I do the complete opposite as you. Your method is probably more realistic, but mine helps me look at the battlefield and easily see who is who to determine best tactic.

With the overabundance of mods, my crew is quite... diverse. No two soldiers are the same, everyone has different armours, pain jobs and cosmetics or they are entirely different specie like Geths or Turians. But Humans are in the majority due to the fact that almost everything fit on them without any clipping or missing body parts... and it makes sense that Humans are in the majority in XCOM, its their planet after all, other non Advent aliens are more or less mercenaries.

My troops are color coded for ease of battlefield recognition. I also play Long War classes:

Specialist: White uniforms. They are also my only officer class.
Ranger: Green
Gunner & Grenadier: Red.
Assault: Beige/yellowish.
Technical: Dark Brown.
Sharpshooter: Blue.
Shinobi: Dark grey.

Hm... username checks out. lol

I don't edit a character's background much. I just adjust their visual looks to look more uniform and professional looking with military camo with a somewhat diverse set of colors based on my mood at the time.

Generally I have my soldiers equipped in armor that looks similar to one another. As they advance, they get additional equipment depending on how they perform. Everyone who makes it past rookie gets an ace in the hole tattoo on their left arm and the xcom sleeve on their right, colored purple(42).
