XCOM 2
PeaceMaker Oct 10, 2018 @ 12:00pm
The Tactical legacy story doesn`t make a lot of sense... Opportunties for a good short story missed.
So far i`m quite liking what you get in this DLC pack. I prefer the campaign, but played most of the story to get the stuff that`s freed up.

The story idea was quite good Bradford telling us what happened from 20 years ago, and hearing him tell it is very nice. But there are things that are missed opportunities or make little sense in a rather lazy manner. i`ll number them for ease of reading:

*WARNING SPOILERS*

1. Why are all the enemies right from the start exactly the same enemies in Xcom 2? I thought we`d be seeing some of the old aliens and then, as we went along some of the newer aliens would show up. It don`t make sense that these aliens are exactly the same as those 20 years later.

2. Are you seriously telling me that Bradford couldn`t rememeber some of those iconic aliens that appear in Xcom 2? A faceless appears and he forgot that thing 20 years later? How? You wouldn`t forget something like that and it wasn`t like he saw one on a dark night, there are multiples! And don`t even start about the other aliens like the robot-alien one and the AVATAR!

To be honest i didn`t think we`d be seeing these aliens as their appearance really screws up the later campaign story.

3. Also items are used that shouldn`t exist yet. It don`t make sense.

4. Why does Bradford look old? Shouldn`t he look younger like the Xcom Enemy unknown 1st game? Yes, he`s ravaged from stress, but he wouldn`t look exatly the same 20 years later.

5. He should also refer more to the Commander`s capture and his difficulty in surviving the attack on the base and getting out - that could have been really interesting. maybe he was afraid for the first time in his life when he saw the Commander get captured, and to his shame, he fled? Perhaps apologising a little to the Commander (player) as he tells the story? Opportunity missed.

I`m sure I`ll find even more stuff as I carry on.

But seriously, a lot of this is a little lazy, is it not?

Anyway, it`s free, (although it`s not really free since you have to have WOC) I appreciate that, but just because it`s free it don`t mean the Devs have to be lazy with the writing. I could have thought of better reasons than explained here, although it would`ve been better just to use the old aliens for most of the story. Anyway i play it just to free up stuff because the story isn`t making enough sense to be enjoyable.

I actually agree with you. While playing, I just said "What ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is he spewing?" But I only care for content, and they didn't dissapoint me in that front. And skirmish. Oh dude, i waited for this thing forever.

Also, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ thing is bit hard in higher difficulty. But managed to barely got a gold medal in 1st part.

Exactly my thoughts when i ran on the first part of that leagcy missions into a codex :D Sectoids used to look different at that time too but yes i think its made like this because the guys who made xcom love that game and spend some extra time using as much assets available as they could and thats ok. Maybe not historical correct but still ok :)

So far im loving it

im not trough all of this but i'd be great to get a pseudo explaination why we lost all the great tech and was never able to recover any of them and had to start research all over again so many times.

I finished first "Campaign" of this DLC. And ye... Walking through ALL enemy's that are in main campaign and even finding a bloody CHOSEN weapons 20 years BEFORE we even met any of them... By all means, I get it its time safer to just reuse old assets (Almost forgot, how the hell did 2035 cars been avelible in 2015?) as making all new stuff that might be visible ONLY for this campaign is rather big time and money investment but still... Feels cheap.

Yea. It`s lazy wrting and implementation. I expected better. I only play it now to free up stuff cos it don`t make a lick o` sense storywise.
XCOM 2 story stopped making any sense with introduction of alien rulers so it is no suprise they just went "whatever just put it in" route.

Everything stated is what I thought but the kicker for me was seeing the AVATAR! THREE OF THEM TO BE PRECISE ON EVERY LAST MISSION FOR EACH OP!!!!! WTF FIRAXIS?!?!?

Yea getting 3 Avatars really messes up the whole main campaign story. I just had that happened. I was hoping it would be a different new alien, but no.

I think you guys just completely miss the point of it.
This isn't a "what happened"-thing but rather a "Cental is telling the story, with bragging and made up ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to look great". Imagine him and you, the commander, sitting in the bar, drunk and he wants to brag and thus makes stuff up to look good. His constant use of "That's how i remember it", "my memory is kinda fuzzy" and all that should be VERY obvious signs for that.

It's basically the exact same way of storytelling as Techland used in Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, where the hero just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around, makes stuff up, with the difference, that there's nobody in Xcom 2 who goes "Wait a minute, that's not how it happened" or "Are you sure that's true". I guess they left it to you, the player.

Maybe Bradford is drunk.

I've said it in a few of these threads... Korsakoff Syndrome. Some sort of weird variant applied to retrograde amnesia or something.

It all started getting daft way back, when they amputated the troops arms, legs and dangle bits so that they could stuff them in a metal dust-bin.
I mean what, why? They could have made the exo-dust-bin to accommodate those bits. I didn't make any sense, like most things in xcom since.

Cover your tracks Mrs Reaper, so she leaves dead bodies, unconsciousness scientist and blood all over the shop, sure they int going to notice.

It's not that. We know that he spent years being drunk between games.

Science also knows this:

https://www.healthline.com/health/wernicke-korsakoff-syndrome

"Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS) is a type of brain disorder caused by a lack of vitamin B-1, or thiamine. The syndrome is actually two separate conditions that can occur at the same time, Wernicke’s disease (WD) and Korsakoff syndrome. Usually, people get the symptoms of WD first. WD is also known as Wernicke’s encephalopathy.

Symptoms of WKS may include confusion, changes to the eyes and vision, or exaggerated storytelling, among others.

Alcoholism, or chronic alcohol misuse, is the most common cause of WKS. WKS can also be linked to diet deficiencies or other medical conditions that impair the absorption of vitamin B-1."

As I said in another thread, alcohol-induced dementia.

Bradford basically drank his brain into worms .

Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. A double whammy combo that specifically lists exaggerated story telling as a symptom or tendency.

Korsikoff's is generally anterograde. Hence my "weird variant" description :steammocking:
