We're in the pipe, 5 by 5
Everytime I start a mission firebrand says this. What does it mean?

And the only reason it was in Aliens is because they are a military outfit and "in the pipe, five by five" is real world military jargon.

Also, he asked what it means, not where it comes from.........

The "five by five" usage doesn't really actually make sense, given that it's about signal strength and readability. As in "read you five by five". But the odd use has been propagated since Aliens.

The skyranger contains a cyrindrical compartment called "the pipe" seperating the seating area and the exit, which needs to be occupied by at least five soldiers lying on top of each other in order for the exit door to open. In order to open the compartment when you have not purchased the squad size upgrade, bradford fills in.

Bradford warns that you shouldnt fly down anything less than a 9x9 but Firebrand likes to live dangerously
