XCOM 2
Do chosen have to be defeated when they show up in a mission?
My first terror mission in my first xcom 2 run, C/I, the Warlock showed up. Thankfully the mission was going flawlessly so it wound up being my squad at full health verse him. Even still, he regerates 3 damage her turn and spams mind control/daze while running away to avoid retaliation. If I had run into more trouble from the rest of the pods I definitely would not have beaten him.

Are they intended to be this beastly, this early on? Is the just a case of needing to "git gud", or can you finish the mission and just leave him there? Worst comes to worst I guess you could just retreat before you have completed the objectives? What are your options with these guys when they show up in a mission?

You can opt to allow them to daze a soldier and extract knowledge. After which the you can carry on with the Mission objectives.

Ofc this would mean their knowledge meter fills up faster. But that’s the compromise.
Uhh I take it they do bad things with this knowledge.

Yep, w/ more knowledges they gain more abilities like summoning mobs, lowers your income and have a chance to attack your base. Avenger base defense is much more different than the vanilla.
So what does kicking their ass do.

Avenger base defense an awesome mission to play through but I'd hate to be unprepared for it.
Is this like the Xcom base defense mission in Enemy Within?

Gets you smapp AP points. But they are immortal and will keep coming back until you kill them at their base. After that, you get rewards

Do they scale in power? The above poster, one of, said they upgrade if they gain intel on you via capturing your soldiers, but if this is generally prevented can you out power creep them significantly?

Also, do they take up a pod on a mission? Or are they always over and above whatever normal pods would be generated in a given mission?

Oh one more, which territories will they show up in? Is there a way to see?

They do their own training and sometimes gain new perks at the end of each month over and above what they start with. It doesn't matter if they capture soldiers or not, but it increases faster with captures. Actually their knowledge doesn't increase all that fast, but you can't stop it.

If you don't take them out at their home base at some point, their knowledge meter will keep increasing until they gain enough to track you to the Avenger location, then they attack with a significant force. They also have guns trained on the avenger which reduces hull integrity. If it hits zero, it's "game over man, game over..." I think each Chosen only attacks in the regions it controls, but I'm not sure.

The Chosen will generally hang near the back of the map so you don't have to deal with them right away, but you do have to eventually.

Thanks! So their knowledge increases pretty slow?

I played on Legendary and one of them filled their knowledge meter by September-October which is roughly July for Commander. Once it is filled, they will initiate Avenger defense mission sooner or later. Before it fills, they will do some annoying stuff like lower income, inititiate additional dank event, steal some equipment or injure crew. Nothing really serious, just annoying.
They get traits during the game's course, and their combination can be quite dangerous. For example, I had a late game Hunter who:
- didn't trigger overwatch,
- could summon 2 berserkers at once,
- was immune to explosions,
- gained shielding for every missed shot,
- teleported after taking damage.
This looks powerful, but by the late game you have enough skills and firepower to deal with it. Having reaper with Banish skill instantly solves 99% of your problems involving Chosen.
