Later on a high level reaper can take killing shots without revealing himself no matter what. You will want them to always be in concealment until the last possible moment.
Use waypoints to move in a closed loop.
Have you tried looking for a mod that would allow you a choice between normal and concealed overwatch?
Once agains, imagine this - you have an Advent landing zone in open field just below a roof on which you have your Reaper ready with a sniper rifle. However, you cannot order him to shoot at landing troops ("no sir, sorry sir, I'm a Reaper sir, I stay in shadows sir, so f... you sir"). And there are no windows nearby :-)
You also cannot order soldier A to give his grenade to soldier B after soldier B used his grenade.
Also, you can't replicate frost bomb, but it re-charges every mission.
Etc, etc.
Gameplay abstraction. They are everywhere.
Anyways, taking overwatch shots from an ambush is bad imo. You wouldn't want all reactive shots wasted on 1 guy with aim penalty. Better to open an ambush with 1 shooter while you use the rest (eg reaper) to go for flank and get crit shot.
I wouldn't want my concealed rangers to reveal in an ambush and getting aim penalties. I need him up close for opening crit shots.
Just one comment, another very good reason for overwatch is when you are waiting for advent reinforcements (red flare burning) - you can shoot in their turn and thereafter move / shoot again in your turn (after they land and disperse). That was the main case which led me to post it, as the Reaper simply won't shoot unless you smash his / her head through a window.
