Plasma Bolt Caster, how?
I know this is a simple and annoying question, but I can't seem to find anything that tells you how to get it, and I know I've gotten it in the past.

But what do I need to research/build to upgrde the bolt caster to plasma? I have nothing left to research (outside of Shadow Chamber projects), and my weapons tab in engineering is greyed out.

So either I somehow screwed up and locked my bolt caster at magnetic, or I'm missing something.

Alien Hunters DLC enabled.
If no WotC OR you decide to get them the original way: A mission pops up - plane from first xcom found.
Else you get an option to for Alien hunter content to blended in - in which case weapons come via research and proving ground.

No, I HAVE the bolt caster. But I'm stuck at Magnetic. I want to know whether I need to research something more, or if my game is messed up.



I know how to get the bolt caster.

If you have the caster at magnetic level, it's not because of the "story lock" on upgrading the hunter weapons. Beyond that, the weapons are avaialble to upgrade as soon as the weapon class they belong to upgrades are unlocked, which for the Bolt Caster, is with the standard rifle upgrades.

Then something is wrong, because I have everything researched, including the inspirations. But for some reason, it won't let me research plasma bolt caster.

Yes, sounds like something is wrong. Probably a mod, since there is no long standing "known" bug issue with upgrading the hunter weapons.

Would recommend just giving one to yourself via console if your game is bugged. According to this thread: https://steamcommunity.com/app/268500/discussions/0/1496741765124391968/
It's possible there's a bug where units with weapons like the Bolt Caster go on Covert Ops, you do the research to upgrade them, but the weapon comes back and isn't upgraded.

Anyway, it SHOULD be giveitem AlienHunterRifle_BM 1 to give yourself one Tier 3 Bolt Caster.

The strange thing is I haven't downloaded any new mods. And the last playthrough I had was last fall, so I'm wondering if it's a new conflict with a recent update maybe.
