XCOM 2
What is the rate of Viper King appearances and how do you fight it?
So when I started my newest campaign, I turned off the dlc missions since I didn't feel like dealing with the bosses this time without knowing you had to actually remove the dlc from the game to get rid of them.

Not only did the viper king show up way before I was ready, it also showed up in several timed missions. I lost a dark event mission due to its freezing ability stopping a hack and I lost my squad due to dealing with the king and its two vipers and the reinforcements the mission sent normally.

So my main question is how often is the viper king supposed to appear and how do I deal with it when my squad is caught in a bad situation. Part of the problem was the vipers sniping my grenadiers out of cover but the main problem was trying to complete the objective while the viper got it's rediculous amount of turns.

You can have all 3 rulers "active" at the same time but you will only get 1 at a time on a mission.

There are 3 ways to deal with them easily.

Abuse concealment. They will not react to stuff they cannot see. So use snipers and throw grenades over cover by using a concealed scout. Also use a reaper, banish and claymore help alot.

Concealment and overwatch. Use concealment to allow you to position yourself for an overwatch trap that you can then trigger with a claymore. If all your guys hit its likely the ruler will either be dead or run away. This is risky though as it can leave you in a bad position if the ruler doesnt die or run.

Use the ruler gear added to the game. Hit the king with a frost grenade as a first move. Then unload with a max damage skill, preferably with shred. A rapid fire ranger for example.
Keep doing max damage until he defrosts. If he doesnt decide to teleport off the map. Repeat.

A bladestorm character can also help alot, as it can get triggered multiple times.

DOTs help alot as well, same as with the chosen. Fire and acid will apply DOTs and they continue to tick while the enemy is frozen in place.

By disabling but not removing the alien ruler dlc. They are triggered on day0 so will start to pop up when they feel like it. I think you need to build the proving ground and build the items.

If it's not a forced evac mission then just ignore the objective. Failing it isn't anywhere near as big of a deal as losing your good soldiers.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

All of the ideas you gave are great but this all happened in late april - early may. I was not ready as the squad I had was inexperienced and the gear equipped was basic.

First encounter you just want to force it to leave.

If it is a bad pull -- like you are fighting it plus some pods, then you should focus on it. Probably going to be very rough, but it will get free shots on you if you focus anything else.

Almost every action you take will give the ruler an action (free actions and concealed actions shouldn't trigger him), so basically only want to take actions that damage the ruler until you are out of damage options.

Ruler fights are very situational, but consider ending turn / skipping guys over move / reload / etc. Get game in with guys that still have ammo and ideally do high damage / crit.
