Crashes after first mission (WOTC)

So I got this game in the collection a few days ago, and I've been unable to play it thanks to constant crashes. I complete the tutorial mission and then in the following cutscene when they're wheeling the commander to the lab, the game crashes at just about the exact point where Tygan says the word, 'atrophy'. Sometimes a message will pop up telling me to upload a log dump, sometimes it'll freeze, and sometimes i'll just get a black screen, forcing me to restart my PC.

I played the base game during a free weekend last year (when WOTC released I think), and I didn't have any of these problems. I played through a bit more of the vanilla save file from back then just before starting a new WOTC game, and that also started to crash after pretty much every mission.

I have no mods installed, I've updated my drivers, I've tried to set it to borderless, and I've verified the files at least 8 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ times, but nothing has improved. Regarding the verification thing, it would usually say there were 2 or so files that it fixed. Then, after it inevitably crashes and i verify again, there would be another 2 or 3 files that had to be repaired.

Any help with this would be appreciated. I would like to play the game that I bought.

have you tied deleting your configs? verifying your game won't touch them. the game has been patched a few times since you first played, so they might be causing issues.

My Games\XCOM2 War of the Chosen\XComGame\Config
