Faceless Unfair
A faceless spawned at the end of my turn, ran to a ladder, jumped up the ladder, and killed two of my people for 6 damage each.

Don't put your soldiers next to each other while on the roof when facless are certain to be nearby, such as on retaliation missions.

Don't run to civilians after you've used your soldiers actions. At least 1 on each retaliation mission is gonna be a faceless. The game likes to have it be one that one of your soldiers tries to rescue. Play so that you have a chance to react to the enemy movement/spawn BEFORE they get to shoot, not after.

generally speaking bunching up your soldiers is a bad thing to do no matter the mission, a lot of enemies have aoe attacks.

This sounds like you need to improve your gameplay, try other tactics that don't involve bunching up. According to you, this has ended your playthrough twice. So basically it happened to you once and then you didn't learn from it.

why did you run? In this game offense is king. If you're going to run, may as well just evac instead that way you can save a few soldiers.

Mind your spaceing you always want your people spread out so you dont have 3 people hit by one grenade,attack,frost breach (Viper king), ETC

Train up a Ranger with the ability that makes him immune to the first attack against him if he kills an opponent and use him as Faceless/Chrysalid bait. You could also get a Specialist with the scanning ability. Also, always leave a couple guys in overwatch.

Stay well away from civs if you might trigger another alien pod. A flashbang will slow it down a lot too. A battle scanner reveals them.

all melee units can dash attack which means ya they can move 20-30 tiles and still take a swipe. the faceless does have a specific ability that it can do a small melee line swipe that i think hits two tiles? you only have to be within that range for the faceless to transform out of its human shape. also other things that cause them to change would be them being the last aliens on the map and i also believe if all other humans are killed or rescued they also change at that moment being as they are the last "humans" though i don't think ive had this ever happen as usually there is at least 2 faceless per map and chances are they will shape change long before all the other humans are gone.

best ways to counter faceless are to try and close in on human target with one or two soldiers but if you cannot reach in a blue move park safely away. any human pod that you cannot reach like this treat as an enemy pack and take cover with overwatch engaged as when you get close enough that an enemy can dash engage there is a good chance of morphing and faceless actually have some crumby defense as they cant take cover so over watch morphing has a good chance of knocking out the opponent before it can reach you.

that will not work because the key is saved, so you can't save scum :) :P

How are you supposed to avoid this? Get armor, better weapons, and learn from your past mistakes. ALWAYS put your soldiers on over watch.

it is enove to have 1 in overwatch and a unit with a close combat reaction skill in front (Ranger, Templar and Skirmisher can get it, i admit Templar need luck to get it)

Your mistake is assuming the faceless spawned and then killed your squad.
Wrong.

He was there the whole time waiting for you.
