Are grenadiers actually worth it?
They seem pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥ compared to the other classes.

Grenadiers are pretty strong in the base game due to the way the game mechanics work, ambush and nuke pod 1, nuke pod 2, nuke pod 3 etc,

Grenades, so many grenades. They're the guys you go to when you need aliens' cover destroyed and/or their armor shredded.
TamTroll Sep 22, 2019 @ 5:54pm
shredding is pretty valuble, as they're the main source of armor shredding.

"Is the best standard class in the game worth it?

There is only one class I consider totally mandatory - and that is the specialist. The rest of your squad? I'd more than happily have all of them be grenadiers, they're overall more useful and more powerful. Still, it is fun to have variety.
Spoiler: Later in the game you can mod the weapons with a +15% chance to hit, so their base accuracy goes from 80-95%. Until that happens, make sure they are in an elevated position and can shoot down, which gives +20% chance to hit elevation bonus. The "Shredder" Skill is essential to remove enemy armor. Also grenades are guaranteed to damage, Area of Effect, and destroy most cover so other soldiers can get a flanking shot. They are essential parts of the team. You can even change the grenades they use for different tactics.

The explosives are pretty powerful later on and are useful due to their added range and area. It is true their accuracy is ♥♥♥♥. I remember on my first playthrough I had one that had like 90% aim though. Gave them scopes and they would mow down everything.

Why? The only times I'd consider them remotely mandatory would be on hack/recover missions since they can use the Gremlin and on really long missions like strongholds and the final mission since healing actually becomes useful there.

Grenades solve everything. Want a new evac zone? Throw a grenade and destroy the platform and you get a new evac zone. You want to go forward and there's a wall, you destroy the wall and damage any enemy next to it. The ViP is inside a Van but you can't reach the Van in time you destroy the door and the Vip is free.

In general, I say yes, they are useful...

In my current run through, specifically in relation to my original and now top ranked grenadier, 'Nads Dangler, I say "no, he's useless, can't hit a wall with an autocannon and for some reason the game won't kill him off".

Grenadiers are reslly good, cover destruction and shredder. Thats only class i usually bring Two of on any mission because they are so strong. AIM pcs and superior scope are priority for my grenadiers.
I think specialist are the least useful but hacking and healing are situational good.

though I kinda agree with what you said, all of those things have backfired on me horribly XD

1. New evac zone was in a safer place, but also further away and it wasn't possible to reach it with the remaining turns left
2. Destroying the wall somehow created a fire that burned one of my soldiers on the roof (2 story part of the building, so I thought it was safe)
3. VIP is spotted by 2 more pods, activating them

Grenadiers are very good for reasons stated. Grenades are powerful, their weapon is a little below a rifle but shredder is very useful and holo targetting (though can be hard to pick over the alternative) can really help kill sectopods and other strong enemies.

It can be very difficult to throw effective grenades as a normal soldier without putting yourself in a terrible spot. Grenadiers have no problem with that.

In Legend I don't use Sharpshooters almost ever (the Reaper pulls their weight due to conceal). They are really weak in most situations and a wasted/weak use of a soldier slot. The only time they are effective is in really niche situations where they can use Death from Above (and steady aim), but it's not worth coddling them up to that level in my opinion for a situational use.

Grenadiers are powerful.

If they get the serial bonus skill, they, by themselves, trivialize unmodded l/i.

Give them max aim via pcs and scopes, superior magazines and watch what they can do with:

Salvo (e.g shredstorm), saturation fire (with max aim they tend to hit everybody even when in cover, shredding everybody they hit while also removing cover) and then serial.

Granted, they are still very strong but not as imba without the bonus skill serial.

If they have that skill, and you equip them like was suggested by other ppl in this thread....then watch what they are capable of.

You will lean back, stare, and realize the following:

You killed armies of the most powerful, unmodded units and you used maybe 2 or 3 soldiers actions. 2 such grenadiers on top of a serial sniper = corpses and burning sectopods everywhere.

Specialists are pretty awesome safety nets, can help out in many scenarios, as healers, hackers, supporters, overwatch guardians. But they are no match on any level for colonel end game grenadiers. No match.

When it comes to killing even the most powerful units, and vast numbers of such units, nothing can compete.

So, yeah....they are very much worth it.

The only downside is that if you play l/i and start to realize just how imba those combos are, youll find yourself bored rather quickly. No even the last mission and wave after wave of enemies is a challenge in unmodded runs. You wont even have to use your consumables. You dont even have to take a psi op or a specialist. They only make it more imba.

Well, actually, their aim maxes out at 75. So, with a suprerior scope it becomes 90.
