If your main concern is leveling up faster and you don't mind taking advantage of an exploit, then you can farm the Lost the first mission you encounter them. They will keep appearing ad infinitum and the game will "bank" your experience. You can only level up once each mission, but it basically means you can gain a level each mission you send a soldier on just by showing up. You can have a colonel in about 6 missions if you farm enough Lost on that character.
Its tedious as hell though.
The problems with farming lost is that it seems like my soldiers become extremely tired whenever I fight them. Or am I just mistaken in this - or is being tired related to something else (for instance, how long the missions lasted).
Also, sorry for a newb question, but: How do I know which missions will have lost in them? Or if a mission will have the Chosen in them?
You won't get any extra tired by dragging a Lost mission on. I've done it many times. If you are playing the integrated option, you will have to do the "Lost and Abandoned" mission anyway. If not playing integrated, then the exploit only works the very first Lost mission. Subsequent Lost missions will not spawn lost endlessly, I think. After the first lost mission, you will always know when lost will appear through the "Horde" sitrep or you will be forewarned by someone, Tygan I think. It's only if you have the "Lost World" dark event active that the lost can spawn without warning on any mission.
Chosen appearing is random, but you can anticipate generally when they will appear. Usually it is every 2-4 missions with some exceptions. You won't get back to back Chosen in the normal rotation of missions.
I've opted to start with one of the Resistance HQs to get a sense of how the new units play. So I do not have the Lost and Abandoned mission enabled.
Gosh, I wish I knew when they appear with greater precision. I have yet to lose a soldier to them (but I do re-load), but they always severely hurt someone and put him out of commission for half a month or more! ;( Will I ever get as possible as they are in the end-game? ;) I am in June, and I don't have any Colonels yet. Nor have I really used the new non-class level-up options. I think I will re-start though - I've lost two of my top units to being captured, and all my A squad are in the hospital :(
Starting a new campaign is fine, since you'll be more familiar with the mechanics. However, one of the best skills to develop is learning how to salvage a campaign that is turning sour and only experience can give you that. If you are in June, that is pretty late on all difficulties except legendary which means you should be able to recruit some high ranked soldiers either from the Black market, scans, or resistance missions. Captured soldiers aren't a problem, you'll get the opportunity to get them back eventually and the rescue missions are quite easy once you get the hang of it. Besides, as your other post indicated, you can recruit lots of ranked faction heroes especially reapers that can really make missions easy. If you can hold out until your top guys are healed/recovered, you'll end up in a stronger position.
Hah, no, I'm a college professor but the real Learned Hand– talk about someone whose name destined him for his calling.
I re-started, as this was my first WotC run, and I was doing too many things wrong (e.g. I did not even bond anyone!). But I am getting the hang of it, so I should do better this time.
Ah, I once aspired to be an academic many moons ago when I was under the spell of the classics! ;)
And I agree on Judge Hand's name. His parents may have been psychics!
