Depends on the mission you are on.
Some missions you are required to EVAC from, such as VIP Rescue ones, because you cannot stay behind. On those missions do not get recover alien articfacts or corpses (for research etc).
Therefore if you leave the fallen squadmate's body behind then you will lose any unique items they were carrying.
These can be anything you've manufactured or upgraded, such as Experimental Grenades and Ammo, useable items such as Mimic Beacons or Medkits, armour suits such as EXO and Spider Suits, or weapons with attached weapon mods.
In short: A soldier carrying a assault rifle with both a Superior Scope and Superior Expanded Magazine gets killled? Better take the body with you when you EVAC or else that weapon is lost!
For other missions, such as Guerilla Ops and Supply Raids, you will get all these items at the end of the mission as long as you neutralise all alien and ADVENT forces. As such you will not be required to carry fallen squadmates with you in these circumstances.
OK, thanks for the explanation :)
Nice necroposting, btw.
The family at leat will have a body
Edit: Not a reply to above post, just the inclusion of this 'harvesting' mechanic!
