Skirmisher. The Swiss army skill set just suits my preferred playstyle. Doesn't get many kills but always has something to add.
I've used the Reaper a lot as well and as a scout it's so much better than a phantom ranger. But it still plays a bit like a sniper to me and I just don't enjoy it as much. Could be I'm played out from the Scout being my favorite class in LW1.
Templars are cool but just haven't grabbed me. They just feel too one dimensional to me compared to pretty much every other class. I know snipers but they can go pistol and rifle and bring a bit more variety to the table. Also they are spectacular at what they do. Templar is a bit meh I feel for most of the time.
As for SPARKS, they are awesome in WotC they have been buffed and with the addition of the fatigue system which they are immune to they are super useful. I barely used SPARKS in vanilla but i found myself outfitting and using an entire 8-man(mod) squad of SPARKS.
SPARKS are also pretty interesting, as a sort of specialist/heavy hybrid with poison/fatigue/psi immunities, they really add an important capability to the team.
On L/I reapers are THE difference. Plus they can pull stuff like this:

Skirmishers are ok and have a couple of really handy moves, but, unlike reapers, they are not game-changers.
Templars are the worst. They are actively bad at low rank if you play L/I (can't go into melee range without someone spotting for them to make sure it's safe), and by the time they "get good" it's practically irrelevant: strong as they are on paper, the rest of the team is just as capable of getting the job done at that point. As a matter of fact in my last runs I don't even CONTACT the templars until after I've hired my 2nd (and 3rd) reaper (as having more hero class soldier total lowers the chance for recruitment covert actions).
And they can finish off wounded soldiers without revealing, so they are almost ever concelead.
I mean, claymore and remote start and banish are the icying on the cake, Skirmishers are very good all around giving you a lot of versatility and crowd control. Templars are the definitive melee with the right perks.
But that conceleament mechanic on the reapers are so good on the field it outshines everything else. Only in some missions with tight timers you might want to prefear a better dmg dealer, but in many occassions reaper alone can complete that objective, stop the timer and become invisible again next turn.
Used the Reaper the most and tried to have one on most missions.
My favorite class is probaby the teplar though. I'm a big fan of the protoss in starcraft so I might be a bit biased, But I will never forget the moment where my reaper templar with psi wave wiped out an entire screen of 15+ enemies with the help of a single grenade.
I really like skirmishers too, It's really satisfying to pull the enemies out of cover. But they just seem so... bland to me.
For reapers, Banish ain't bad, but their real power seems to be the claymore. They're great for spotting and picking off injured troops, but they do feel under-powered on long missions. They're great for short missions. I've read that they're under-powered for Beta Strike variants. I'm going to start a Beta Strike campaign next.
Skirmishers? Yep, wish I could get more than one. Ionic ripjack in the mid game, now that's a marvel. Bladestorm? Sure, it's inherent! (or at least I've had it on two of them). Grapple, jack, sword, two shots per turn, Michael Dorn's voice! What more could you ask for?! Oh yeah, better abilities. Their mid tier abilities really suck.
Skirmishers are great all-rounders. The fact they can use their grapple to get great positions is often a matter of life and death. Multiple attacks, melee attacks and improved grenades are all a big difference, so I always try to keep a skirmisher in the squad.
Templars don't have the explosive damage of Rangers, but their deflection ability makes them the ultimate out-front soldier. Having a Templar in the squad is like having another ranger with another dimension, so I always prefer to have one at hand.
Suddenly god-tier scouts will become the most important thing ever.
Reapers as mentioned are the best scouts.
Templars doesn't really grab me that much tbh. I think they can be quite good during a normal mission where you expect a Chosen to show up because of their teleport ability etc. But I would never take a templar on a big mission like the Chosen Stronghold.
Reaper is good in terms of scouting, and will do a good damage later on. But oh man , Mox he is a game changer since his early ranks, he is a game changer and so flexible; two actions, can pull an enemy and can jump to an enemy, and can shoot then use an item or a bomb.
So to rank them in a perspective of a L/I run, Skirmishers will always win.
