What's your favorite WOTC class?
So WOTC added 3 new soldier classes to the game, Skirmishers, Reapers, and Templars. Which one's your favorite?
I personally don't own WOTC, so I can't really say anything, but from the many youtube videos I've seen, I would say that Templars seem like ones I would want to use, with Skirmishers being a close second. Reapers are cool in terms of looks and lore, but they just don't match my play style.
If you like SPARKS from Shen's Last Gifts, you can say that too.

Honestly

Skirmisher. The Swiss army skill set just suits my preferred playstyle. Doesn't get many kills but always has something to add.

I've used the Reaper a lot as well and as a scout it's so much better than a phantom ranger. But it still plays a bit like a sniper to me and I just don't enjoy it as much. Could be I'm played out from the Scout being my favorite class in LW1.

Templars are cool but just haven't grabbed me. They just feel too one dimensional to me compared to pretty much every other class. I know snipers but they can go pistol and rifle and bring a bit more variety to the table. Also they are spectacular at what they do. Templar is a bit meh I feel for most of the time.

All have their uses, but I like Skirmishers the best they fit my play style the best and firing twice in a turn is nice. Getting a lot or "hero" units is next to impossible I have heard up to 3 from your starting faction and 2 from the others. The problem with that is not the number but rather the chance of getting a unit with high combat intelligence among them, the new classes need more AP than the base classes to be really really good.

As for SPARKS, they are awesome in WotC they have been buffed and with the addition of the fatigue system which they are immune to they are super useful. I barely used SPARKS in vanilla but i found myself outfitting and using an entire 8-man(mod) squad of SPARKS.

Yah I find I like them all for different reasons. I like the 'jedi' feel of the templars, and the skirmishers ability to stun fools has saved my bacon over and over. The super stealth of the reaper is useful, although my playstype was always more agressive and less about stealth (probably why I still have not finished an impossible game)

SPARKS are also pretty interesting, as a sort of specialist/heavy hybrid with poison/fatigue/psi immunities, they really add an important capability to the team.

Reapers. Definitely reapers, no competition here.
On L/I reapers are THE difference. Plus they can pull stuff like this:

Skirmishers are ok and have a couple of really handy moves, but, unlike reapers, they are not game-changers.

Templars are the worst. They are actively bad at low rank if you play L/I (can't go into melee range without someone spotting for them to make sure it's safe), and by the time they "get good" it's practically irrelevant: strong as they are on paper, the rest of the team is just as capable of getting the job done at that point. As a matter of fact in my last runs I don't even CONTACT the templars until after I've hired my 2nd (and 3rd) reaper (as having more hero class soldier total lowers the chance for recruitment covert actions).

Reapers are game changers. Their scouting ability is just that good. Knowing the position of pods before they get activated, giving your snipers los to hit distant targets (avenger defence anyone?).

And they can finish off wounded soldiers without revealing, so they are almost ever concelead.

I mean, claymore and remote start and banish are the icying on the cake, Skirmishers are very good all around giving you a lot of versatility and crowd control. Templars are the definitive melee with the right perks.

But that conceleament mechanic on the reapers are so good on the field it outshines everything else. Only in some missions with tight timers you might want to prefear a better dmg dealer, but in many occassions reaper alone can complete that objective, stop the timer and become invisible again next turn.

I found the same on Commander. I wanted to use my Templar more, but he didn't do much. I use Rangers for melee a lot, so it's not that I'm adverse to that. But outside of melee he can't do much until later.

Used the Reaper the most and tried to have one on most missions.

I think the best one is probably reaper, but only because they're overpowered and not because I like their playstyle. I just feel obligated to use them constantly because of how good they are.

My favorite class is probaby the teplar though. I'm a big fan of the protoss in starcraft so I might be a bit biased, But I will never forget the moment where my reaper templar with psi wave wiped out an entire screen of 15+ enemies with the help of a single grenade.

I really like skirmishers too, It's really satisfying to pull the enemies out of cover. But they just seem so... bland to me.

Reapers, had one solo a Chosen and pod by throwing a claymore on a car and then blow it up, the stealth ability is broken too, most of the time they dont even need to shoot thier gun

That little templar mind trick, you know the one, switch places with an enemy, that one has a huge utility against avatars and Chosen. Ionic storm has nice possibilities, too. They need to have bladestorm though to be really good on defense. It'd be nice if they could take a non-attack action after their attack as then they could pop a mimic if you play too aggressively.

For reapers, Banish ain't bad, but their real power seems to be the claymore. They're great for spotting and picking off injured troops, but they do feel under-powered on long missions. They're great for short missions. I've read that they're under-powered for Beta Strike variants. I'm going to start a Beta Strike campaign next.

Skirmishers? Yep, wish I could get more than one. Ionic ripjack in the mid game, now that's a marvel. Bladestorm? Sure, it's inherent! (or at least I've had it on two of them). Grapple, jack, sword, two shots per turn, Michael Dorn's voice! What more could you ask for?! Oh yeah, better abilities. Their mid tier abilities really suck.

I really can't see all the fuss with Reapers. They are low damage dealers in terms of their rifles. They can cause a bit of damage with claymores and detonating explosive things such as cars and fuel tanks, but those opportunities are few and far between (similar to the oft-hyped sharpshooters getting high, clear ground to cause damage). I use them for supply drop missions or anything where I need to scout ahead, but not for damage. Their end game abilities are good, but so are everyone else's.

Skirmishers are great all-rounders. The fact they can use their grapple to get great positions is often a matter of life and death. Multiple attacks, melee attacks and improved grenades are all a big difference, so I always try to keep a skirmisher in the squad.

Templars don't have the explosive damage of Rangers, but their deflection ability makes them the ultimate out-front soldier. Having a Templar in the squad is like having another ranger with another dimension, so I always prefer to have one at hand.

Start playing with ironman ON.
Suddenly god-tier scouts will become the most important thing ever.

Skirmishers are excellent at taking down the Chosen, their multiple shots combined with high mobility means they can just be right next to the Chosen and shoot them multiple times in the face. Their multiple shots also make them good for destroying the sarcophagus.

Reapers as mentioned are the best scouts.

Templars doesn't really grab me that much tbh. I think they can be quite good during a normal mission where you expect a Chosen to show up because of their teleport ability etc. But I would never take a templar on a big mission like the Chosen Stronghold.
swordfish Feb 16, 2021 @ 7:02pm
I am playing on legend/Iron and I totally ignored my Templar. Low damage, needs a lot of leveling before it pays off, and finally and most importantly on any Legend/Ironman, the Templar poses a great chance of triggering another pod and making me lose my entire run.
Reaper is good in terms of scouting, and will do a good damage later on. But oh man , Mox he is a game changer since his early ranks, he is a game changer and so flexible; two actions, can pull an enemy and can jump to an enemy, and can shoot then use an item or a bomb.
So to rank them in a perspective of a L/I run, Skirmishers will always win.
