XCOM 2

You are not ready, ready for what? (Xcom 3, possible spoiler)
At some point you are told by the Advent that you are not ready for what is to come and that threat actually seems genuine, something seems to have been following the Elders all along, something dangerous.

However if Xcom 3 evolves around something from "the deep" I am curious as to how these could have followed the elders through space.

It could be an empty threat but the way it was made I doubt it.

In Terror of the Deep it was around the Chutullu Mythos.

And this are Gods who travels trough Space, Outer Space and Nothingness. So they can follow you even into the 4526th Dimension in the 882377th parallel Universe.

Aaah, only played the original DOS Ufo-enemy unknown ... never got into Terror of the Deep.

Yeah I was thinking about that also, I think it was the warlock that spoke about there being a bigger enemy out there. Cant remember what he said, but I was wondering if the elders was actually trying to find a way to defeat an even stronger alien race that is after them.

It's pretty obvious from XCOM EU, XCOM 2 and WOTC that the elders are, indeed, under assault (and on the run) from something.
What that "something" is and, more importantly, how universally hostile to mankind it will be is yet to be seen.

Given that XCOM is about fighting stuff it will be very hostile to mankind.

Not necessarily universally.
There might be some kind of "war in heavens" going on and some side might very well end up as mankind's allies.

Nah, i pretty much expect some sort of cosmic "end game" to wipe out the universe and pushing the elders with their pet projects around to find the solution aka best warrios-yadda-yadda.
Imho the "threat" is alien to the elders too, think cosmic horror, and thus their general approach of domination and influencing simply did not work.
They speak to vague of the threat to be just some sort of diplomatic power play between two factions.

Probably extradimensional invaders whose world is dying, so they`re trying to take this one. Y`know, Apocalypse.

It's a bit of a chicken and egg situation: maybe the elders became extreme in their methods because of the threat, maybe the threat became very hostile to the elders because of the extreme methods they were willing to use.

Not sure if that truly applies.
XCOM as a series was always pretty much about fighting stuff that is overwhelming without much nuance or story attached.
We changed one big bad for another big bad. That is pretty much all to it.

Both XCOM EU and XCOM 2 are pretty upfront about the fact that the aliens are not just "the big bad" — they have motivation beyond Earth, only invade because humanity has something to offer and are not initially planning to genocide anyone if that's not required.

I wonder if humanity faced the same whether we would become the elders, from looking at the world today something tells me we could be even worse.

The Bureau is canon

I was wondering the same thing. If the Elders were chased and trying to make something more powerful. Then what is in the ocean? Also, they mentioned that we had killed an Elder, when did that happen?
EpicCoinFlip Sep 8, 2017 @ 10:38am
Its being mention during the campaign that theres this huge comsic war going on. Even the Elders at the end declare something along the lines "What has followed us, will follow you". So its obviously been a long planned setup for Xcom3. In worst case another expansion, which im fine with to be honest.
