XCOM 2
Chosen Assassin decimating all my troops in early game and I can't do anything about it
So here's the deal, it's my first game of WotC, the first Chosen I come up against is the Assassin and she rolls with "immune to melee" and "doesn't trigger overwatch" traits.

I understand that these traits are randomised when you first meet them? And random traits get added over time as they get stronger also?

Well, basically this broke the entire game for me. I'm ♥♥♥♥ed. She has 3 actions per turn, so all that happens is, she charges in, decks one of my soldiers, then runs off again to hide behind some wall I can't get to.

I can't overwatch her, I can't melee her with my templar (who's not that powerful yet anyway), I can't even get ♥♥♥♥ing bladestorm strikes on her.

It's absolutely broken and I already spent literally 1 hour reloading the Blacksite mission I am on where she's there decking me and I still can't succeed with it. This is completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t and I'd like the devs to see this in the hope that they fix some of these combos of abilities that can be generated. It's utter garbage and I don't know if starting a new game will even be any better. This completely ruined the game for me, I've lost 2 entire squads already and I can literally do NOTHING about it.

I was having a lot of fun until this point :(

I literally had the exact same step up. She would stealth in, hit my guys, then stealth out. Can't melee her, can't OW her.

Solution, scanners. I would throw them in spots where I knew she was hiding. Then I would blast her ass with everything I had. Her weakness for me was Reapers and having the height advantage. She got me good a few times but now I've got her number.

Remember to think outside the nom buddy. Every offense can be countered. I constantly check Shen to see what fun toys she can make for me. I then pass that stuff out to my guys.

Yeah I've tried taking a Reaper on the mission too, and scouted out the Assassin with perma-vision mode. It still doesn't help, because with her insane movement speed she can always run away to hide behind some wall or something that's miles away from my troops.

I managed once to take her down after luring her into the open a bit, but 2 of my guys were bleeding out after being ONE SHOT by her (literally) and then I would have to carry them to the end of the mission to even get out of there, let alone collecting the Blacksite data AND fighting through another 4 pods of enemies (yeah with 2 soldiers, right).

Theres nothing wrong with her. Theres also nothing wrong with the kind of combo's they can get. You just need to learn to fight her. If you can find and flank her she will no longer be stealthed. I used my Reaper to do this while still in Shadow. If you listen carefully you can figure out where she is and move to flank and reveal her. Once I figured that out I did it everytime and she literally could not do anything. She had the same Strengths as you. Doesn't trigger overwatch and was immune to melee. Wasn't much of a problem. Scanners, Scanning Protocol works as well if you can't find her while shes stealthed.

lol seriously... there's nothing wrong with her? I don't have scanners yet, nor scanning protocol. My guys aren't that high level.

Anything else you want to tell me about my game that's obviously working completely 100% fine and balanced when I've been stuck reloading the same mission for 2 hours already?

And I've been scouting her with my Reaper like I'm supposed to, you seem to think I'm some kind of idiot. It's not a matter of "learning to fight her" when she literally appears out of thin air, KO's one of my soliders (he literally bleeds out in one hit), and then disappears off behind some wall 10 squares away that I can't get to nor blow up (because my team doesn't have a grenadier in it for this mission).

There is something seriously wrong with this combo of abilities when it has completely ruined my game at this point in.
Mine has both of those strengths, but also has a weakness to Reapers and explosives. She was fairly easy to kill once you reveal her, or she retreats nearby. She's often not strong enough early game to one shot any of your full health troops.

Honestly the Chosen provide a challenge, as they are meant too, but none of them are impossible to beat.

yes, she is. She one shots all of my troops. I only just got 1 EXO suit built and that guy takes 2 shots for her to kill, but the rest of the squad 1 shotted.

I assume you're playing on Veteran, cause even on Legendary she does not one shot full health troops...

This is another one of those 'git gud' threads.

The best way to deal with her is to reveal her before she got a chance to attack.

The assassin always moves directly towards your units and use full cover whenever available (even in Stealth)

Use this and the occasional hint the system gives you to estimate her position and flank her.

Flanking her will reveal her and allow you to kill her before she even gets a single hit in. In case you do not have a unit that can flank her you can also reveal her in the early game by throwing a grenade on her stealthed position.

Later on you unlock the battle scanner and scanning protocol what will allow you to reveal her without flanking or a grenade.

As he said. None of them are impossible.

It just sounds to me that you made one too many mistakes and you just might need to start a new playthrough and make changes due to what you have learned.

She doesn't appear out of thin air. She follows the same rules a Ranger does when he's concealed and melee attacks.

You have to listen carefully during her turn - you will hear if she climbs ladders, breaks windows or opens doors. That will help you to deduce where she is and reveal her on your turn.

Keeping a Reaper out in front can reveal her when she moves.

Who's fault is that?

As for melee immunity - Use Amplify with Templar. It's there to deal with Chosen.

So if its the first time one of your guys has access to shadow, put that person ahead of your team, when assassin comes in and then retreates you have a chance to still know where she is, I got lucky because she got cover near a ambulance, grenadier ♥♥♥♥♥♥ her up. also keep your guys grouped

if you can't ow maybe you should take proper cover and use... hunker down :D

Even without scanners or reapers you should detect her by running towards her spawn location with first action and running back with second. And if you got her location on your turn before she attacks, it's really easy to finish her. Here is screen how she dies to claymore+remote start (was weak to explosive)
What does not work:
- Don't wait for her with everyone holding his position. Just free attacks for her
- Don't hunker down or use smoke, she'll hit anyway

And if you could not detect her on your turn:
- Group two soldiers very close, if you are lucky, she'll use aoe wave or aoe blind - still better then 4 hp sword attacks.

LOL clearly people are responding here who never even fought this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Assassin. She doesn't shoot at me, she ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ charges in and one shot melee's my guys. Hunker down does absolutely ♥♥♥♥ all.

I've resorted to loading my save before even going into the Blacksite mission, and I will simply ignore it until the very last possible moment with the Avatar project. Clearly my squad isn't ready for doing that mission plus having a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Assassin on top of them at the same time.

Thanks to everyone responding with "git gud" really ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ helpful, I'll remember that next time some retarded game mechanics ♥♥♥♥ over my entire game, just "git gud" yeah... obvious, duh, why was I so stupid!

Thank you at least this is some useful advice. I had her use smoke bomb on me once but wasn't sure what the criteria was for her to do it.
