People that say Gatecrasher on Legendary is supereasy -.-
How do you do it easily then?

I kill the first two pods without problems. Overwatch the last pod (officer), then I used elevated high cover and flank them. Officer critted down to 1 hp(85%), 85% flank close range shot miss, grenade removes officer cover and same time brings another advent down to 1 hp, ~65% flank killshot on officer miss with my last person who couldn't get a grenade on.

Advent takes their turn, they scooby about, nothing too dangerous, mostly running out of flanking positions, marking me, overwatch???, and a single shot that hits and puts a guy on 1 hp.

Okay fine, this should be easy. Grenade to remove cover & overwatch, which also puts next enemy down to 1 hp. 85% close range flank on enemy, MISS. 85% flank from elevated high cover, MISS. I used the marked guy to save the guy on 1 hp with his grenade. One enemy down.

Advents turn, officer moves forward maybe trying to find the marked guy, then firing on my elevated unmarked full health person in high cover. Hit, for 4 damage, DEAD. -.-
Ugh.

So tell me again how it's supereasy?
Overwatch traps (inc. one I activated then dash back to overwatch my team in elevation), high cover elevated flanking, grenades that put them on 1 hp and a bunch of 85% misses. What to do different, it sure don't seem supereasy to me.

I don't think anyone said that. Gatecrasher is very rng reliant since all you have is grenades, but if you do badly on it you can just restart the game.
David Sep 5, 2017 @ 2:08pm
I could move around start with the officer pod from concealment, but given that overwatch trap is pretty effective compared to overwatch from concealment since you get extra attacks I don't know if that'd help at all really.

Someone said it was easy earlier. I really don't see how it's easy with vanilla rooks. Anyhow I agree with you, there's some rng in there. The enemy have the same & better stats/skills than you do, you have the advantages of numbers, surprise, more grenades and human intelligence, but with 65-85% shots that can miss, and leave them on 1 hp too too, there's room for rng I think.

I tried to finish off the officer because he's the most dangerous and can one hit but he just didn't want to die -.-

Well, I did get lucky once I guess and got a perfect gatecrasher legend. Beaglerush tactic to start and only high cover. Instead of a low percentage shot or ovetwatch I hunkerdown.

Also I don't remember if there is a timer or not since it's been awhile, but if there isn't I am pretty sure you can overwatch scum it if anything. Just overwatch until the aliens won't come out of the fog, then send one guy out to look at them and then run back to full cover.

huh? gatecrasher is a hard mission, all early missions are pretty hard compared to later game stuff. its just the fact u can restart the mission if ppl die who u dont want to. also its 65%misses not 85%. new recruits who flank have 65%chance to hit

That being said the mission is easy because if u mess up you kill ur squad with grandes on urself, and enemy pods always have same spawns if u restart the mission that way.

And generally save grenades for commander, because he is the biggest threat by far.

There's no timer, I overwatch scummed but rooks aren't all that accurate in overwatch outside of concealment. Even then, my guys OW wiped the first pod, and I got 3 OW hits on the sectoid pod, but the Officer pod just cleaned me out damn.

Okay true but most were still 85% misses, one of them was probably closer to 65, I'll fix the OP.
+20% from elevation or +20% from close range(down to 1 tile) on isolated enemies
enemy flanked

I wanted to grenade the commander directly but I chose to remove his cover instead and injure another soldier. It was a tossup what to do there. Direct hit on commander OR direct hit on trooper(possible kill) and remove CO's cover. The other grenade I had to use because there was an advent 1 tile away from him and he already had 1 hp so he was dead if I didn't- plus it achieved getting much better cover for the guy who was marked at the same time.

They weren't flank shots from afar, they were from elevation or on a trooper who got separated and tried to flank me.

Well I never heard anyone saying Gatecrasher, in Legend no less, its 'supereasy'. In fact a case could be made its actually one of the most difficult missions. Anyway.

You need a bit of luck no matter what. You don't have the tools to CC or reliable damage dealers so gotta roll these flanked, high ground shots and pray. High ground can be a trap tho, as its mostly half cover and that means injured/dead soldiers most often that not.

You dont have turn limit here, so you can take your time. I normally scout the whole map first to locate all pods, triggering one at a time is of utmost importance. My strategy relies on OW ambush the first trooper pod, then OW creep to the other pods one by one. I try to take first the officer pod then the sectoid one, but this may vary on pod positioning.

Prioritize the officer always. He CAN one-shot ur guys. The sectoid too, but he prioritizes revive/MC first UNLESS he has a cleae flanked shot, so can be gamed. Troopers CANT one shot you behind cover (even low one), as they dont have crit chance naturally and a max of 3 damage. One easy way to spot salty players on their rants is when they claim they lose several troops in a turn to this guys behind cover, thats just BS (not your case, just sayin).

So no, I wont say its supereasy, and getting that 1hp officer 'dodge' two 85% shots to crit u dead next turns is perfectly possible. Heck, I dont have any stats on this, but Im sure 90% restarts on L/I campaigns are in this mission.

In WotC, you can start Gatecrasher with a hero unit and that indeed makes things easier. Reaper in fact does make it 'supereasy' but thats another story...

Yeah I saw a thread rant earlier of someone saying their guys got crit on gatekeeper in full cover which rang alarm bell for me too :P

Anyway I'll just restart, although its cheesey. Maybe I'll be converted into a "start with faction hero"-er.

Anyone who would say that lies or cheats. I haven't touched Legend in WotC but in vanilla, the first time I won that mission, I did it by activating all the pods at the same time near the target. Go figure. :steammocking:

Great tip right here, and remember that you can game the cover to make sure anyone who has taken a hit doesn't get hit again by dropping them in high cover while someone else uses low cover instead, ideally from high ground to give the offensive advantage.

When all is said and done Gatecrasher is probably in the top 2-3 hardest missions in the campaign, exactly because of what happened to you - you can miss shots and you can't get a whole string of guarantees.

So if someone is saying it's supereasy then that's probably just an empty boast.

That's a good tip above moving an injured person into high cover (he was anyway, but he missed a faceshot). The officer actually went for my high cover elevated person over person I moved back (low cover+marked), but I guess he had a bit of good angle bonus on my high cover person. Possible he didn't regain LOS on the marked soldier, or the elevated soldier gained enough +risk assessment to be targeted instead.

edit: ugh it's brutal, overwatch trap misses, followed by 4 70% flank misses on the same guy (all flank because his cover was fragile which got destroyed on the first flank miss), who ofc hits me -.-
Going to miss the cheatery of commander- helping you out on miss chains.

I stopped using overwatch a long time ago, it's just unreliable. Spread soldiers out, break concealment, move to cover/flank, kill. Overwatch just doesnt work with rookies and having the aliens get a move right after is always bad news

L/I beta strike is the most fun! Sectoid with 20hp running/hiding on the edge of Fog while mind controlling one of your guys and sending a zombie after you is awesome!

There is nothing you can do about early game. it is just a RNG fest.
I had 1 time 3 soldiers flanking a 1 HP soldier. and all 3 75% shots missed. (yes it was 75% cause of close range bonus)

Luckily for me he ran off to join another pod. cause all three were standing in the open and grenade bait.

It was legitimately hard in vanilla. Now you can just pick a Reaper and clear it easily (the claymore alone will take out an entire pod).
David Sep 5, 2017 @ 4:27pm
Finally. Overwatched officer pod then fled dash back to a roof where they mostly didn't have LOS on me, which led to this:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1128942078

Sectoid pod came after but my guys were in overwatch heaven, never missed.
Pretty much it all came down to getting a good initial overwatch result for each pod, then just mopping up, breaking LOS to get attacks from rooftop helped too (they patrol too far from it to catch them there).
