Someone said it was easy earlier. I really don't see how it's easy with vanilla rooks. Anyhow I agree with you, there's some rng in there. The enemy have the same & better stats/skills than you do, you have the advantages of numbers, surprise, more grenades and human intelligence, but with 65-85% shots that can miss, and leave them on 1 hp too too, there's room for rng I think.
I tried to finish off the officer because he's the most dangerous and can one hit but he just didn't want to die -.-
Also I don't remember if there is a timer or not since it's been awhile, but if there isn't I am pretty sure you can overwatch scum it if anything. Just overwatch until the aliens won't come out of the fog, then send one guy out to look at them and then run back to full cover.
That being said the mission is easy because if u mess up you kill ur squad with grandes on urself, and enemy pods always have same spawns if u restart the mission that way.
And generally save grenades for commander, because he is the biggest threat by far.
Okay true but most were still 85% misses, one of them was probably closer to 65, I'll fix the OP.
+20% from elevation or +20% from close range(down to 1 tile) on isolated enemies
enemy flanked
I wanted to grenade the commander directly but I chose to remove his cover instead and injure another soldier. It was a tossup what to do there. Direct hit on commander OR direct hit on trooper(possible kill) and remove CO's cover. The other grenade I had to use because there was an advent 1 tile away from him and he already had 1 hp so he was dead if I didn't- plus it achieved getting much better cover for the guy who was marked at the same time.
They weren't flank shots from afar, they were from elevation or on a trooper who got separated and tried to flank me.
You need a bit of luck no matter what. You don't have the tools to CC or reliable damage dealers so gotta roll these flanked, high ground shots and pray. High ground can be a trap tho, as its mostly half cover and that means injured/dead soldiers most often that not.
You dont have turn limit here, so you can take your time. I normally scout the whole map first to locate all pods, triggering one at a time is of utmost importance. My strategy relies on OW ambush the first trooper pod, then OW creep to the other pods one by one. I try to take first the officer pod then the sectoid one, but this may vary on pod positioning.
Prioritize the officer always. He CAN one-shot ur guys. The sectoid too, but he prioritizes revive/MC first UNLESS he has a cleae flanked shot, so can be gamed. Troopers CANT one shot you behind cover (even low one), as they dont have crit chance naturally and a max of 3 damage. One easy way to spot salty players on their rants is when they claim they lose several troops in a turn to this guys behind cover, thats just BS (not your case, just sayin).
So no, I wont say its supereasy, and getting that 1hp officer 'dodge' two 85% shots to crit u dead next turns is perfectly possible. Heck, I dont have any stats on this, but Im sure 90% restarts on L/I campaigns are in this mission.
In WotC, you can start Gatecrasher with a hero unit and that indeed makes things easier. Reaper in fact does make it 'supereasy' but thats another story...
Anyway I'll just restart, although its cheesey. Maybe I'll be converted into a "start with faction hero"-er.
Great tip right here, and remember that you can game the cover to make sure anyone who has taken a hit doesn't get hit again by dropping them in high cover while someone else uses low cover instead, ideally from high ground to give the offensive advantage.
When all is said and done Gatecrasher is probably in the top 2-3 hardest missions in the campaign, exactly because of what happened to you - you can miss shots and you can't get a whole string of guarantees.
So if someone is saying it's supereasy then that's probably just an empty boast.
<3
edit: ugh it's brutal, overwatch trap misses, followed by 4 70% flank misses on the same guy (all flank because his cover was fragile which got destroyed on the first flank miss), who ofc hits me -.-
Going to miss the cheatery of commander- helping you out on miss chains.
L/I beta strike is the most fun! Sectoid with 20hp running/hiding on the edge of Fog while mind controlling one of your guys and sending a zombie after you is awesome!
There is nothing you can do about early game. it is just a RNG fest.
I had 1 time 3 soldiers flanking a 1 HP soldier. and all 3 75% shots missed. (yes it was 75% cause of close range bonus)
Luckily for me he ran off to join another pod. cause all three were standing in the open and grenade bait.
It was legitimately hard in vanilla. Now you can just pick a Reaper and clear it easily (the claymore alone will take out an entire pod).

Sectoid pod came after but my guys were in overwatch heaven, never missed.
Pretty much it all came down to getting a good initial overwatch result for each pod, then just mopping up, breaking LOS to get attacks from rooftop helped too (they patrol too far from it to catch them there).
