Is a workshop worth building?
The cost is so damn steep and all it seems to do is give you the potential to +1 an engineer for 250 supplies+20 (10) days building. And then another +1 engineer for another 150 supplies.

All this on top of wasting the time you used to get the empty space.

Is it me or is this really only a good investment if you think you're going to be engineer starved?

I almost always build that workshop. Or a Laboratory. It is a simple calculation of what I have enough, engineers or scientists. The benefit does outwitght the costs - in early game. In early game you have one or two scientists/engineers, it basicly doubles either your research or halfes your excavation time. Sometimes I get two or three engineers in a row through missions, but no scientists, then I do build the lab - or the other way around.

Mostly I build the workshop because I want that supplies/elerium cristals/alien alloy from the excavation of the deeper layers. So I do buil a workshop adjustend to a power relay and a resistant comm and have my gremlins do the work there and the engineers are basicly looting. ^^

You don't need any of the building in the end though, where you have plenty of both. Having 10% more research speed only helps on legendary, engineers will sit idle if verything is build and staffed.

depending on placement and how your game goes it can be useful, turn 2 engineers into 4 can be pretty good if you place your workshop in the center area, as you said it can be useful if your engineer starved, and there is a breakthrough research which halves the cost. 1 fully staffed workshop can fully man a power station and a resistance contact building.

As NightWhisper said, its all about where you place those workshops, usually placing them in the center can make it a whole lot easier to staff rooms with Gremlins without the need of having to use all of your engineers.

I feel the Workshop was marginal/situational in vanilla, and has become less worthwhile in WotC, unless they added some functionality to it that I'm not aware of. There's more pressure for room slots, and it's more expensive.

its good to get if your supplies are in a good area as early on it can speed up your excavation time by alot but it is really only effective if used in the center, it can be used on the sides since you get a max of 4 gremlins which is enough for power/comms. You'll probably want to build one eventually anyways unless you have a good surplus on engineers. on commander and below i wouldnt say it's needed, it was a extremely helpful thing in the base game on legend but im not sure how much it costs in war of the chosen on legend
