Templar "volt" needs a buff or redesign.
It doesn't 'chain' to targets like it says it does. Should just remove it for soulfire. Use it on a giant horde of lost all right next to each other, doesn't do anything but do damage to 1 lost.

It chains only if your focus is on level 2 or higher.

It will effect as many enemies as your current focus level.
For example
1 focus= single target
3 focus damages 3 targets.
It will still cost 1 though

Yup, had no issues just now of it chaining, used it on Warlock and it chained his 2 zombies

Wow, thats still quite bad though. Unless their colonal tier makes it act like face-off.

It's a squaddie rank ability, what do you expect? Templars get a bunch of insane abilities later on.

Think I'm just used to Long War, where abilities are stronger since enemies have passives as well.

The description is still seriously lacking. I don't think it says you need focus for it to hit extra targets, and nowhere does it describe what "nearby" is. I had two points of focus and shot it at a sectoid with a soldier like four or five spaces away and it just did 3 damage to the sectoid. I was so underwhelmed I was like "welp, not using this again"

As far as the "squaddie ability" argument goes, the Reaper and the Skirmirsher get pretty dang good abilites in super-stealth, claymore, fire-twice, and ripjack. This volt ability is worthless in comparison to those.

Templars do get pretty awesome, but they're still only melee units. Damage feels a bit lacking IMO, though they can still wreck lost indefinitely. Have one at major rank and i've been sending her on covert ops to boost her mobility to the point that she has 22 now (she can just clear almost entire maps in one move, nothing can run from her) even though she's my favourite unit I know that if I was playing commander or legendary (playing veteran) her damage would be severely lacking. They're like worse psionics that cost way more time and effort to train.

Our invincible psychic magister godkings remain the best units I think.

Then again I haven't seen the Colonel tier abilities, maybe they change things up.

It's guaranteed damage. Do you think combat protocol is worthless too? Not to mention that it can easily do 20+ damage on a higher level templar
Templars also basically get implacable and untouchable for free at squaddie rank, so i wouldn't say that they are lacking in the early game.

I don't think combat protocol is useless, but I certainly hardly ever take it.

Untouchable? Are you talking about the parry ability? I'm pretty sure that isn't squaddie rank available. Well, unless you are talking about the first rank up - I was comparing the hero classes at level zero, pretty sure Templars do not start with parry.

Ah, true, i mixed that up. Parry at cpl is pretty much a no-brainer tho, and it takes 1-2 missions to get there, so there really isn't a huge difference.

Just checked again, best abilities Templars so far is invert IMO. Swap with a unit behind cover, wade into the center of a group of enemies with bladestorm active, Rend (maybe with the shockwaves to hit multiple people) then Parry can be awesome and ridiculous.

But again, this is on normal, I don't know how viable their damage is on commander/legendary

Its REALLY helpful on legendary for killing chosen. Just Invert the chosen right in front of your squad and enjoy a free kill since you have 5-7 squad members/mind controlls all just shooting a flanked 100% chance to hit chosen. And if done right you can still hit the chosen with a rend.

Just promoted my Templar to Colonel, I take everything back they're nice and beautifully OP, enough so to compete with psychics <3

You can see who it will chain to when you select the ability, it'll make the targets glow. The description does say it chains when at higher focus. I read it quick the first time and didnt realize what it said. Caught me off guard when it didn't chain the first time I used it at 1 focus.
