Vanilla - Kill All Enemies Required?
So, decided to play an L/I run before the XPac came out, but it hasn't been going well. I just ended my 5th attempt only about 5 missions in. It was going so well...

However, when I came back from that squad wipe (It's amazing how just a little bit of extra health makes them SO much more dangerous. Well that and the 50/50 Mind Control rates...), I was given a success message. I had already completed the objective, but 'secure the area' was still unchecked. Is kill all enemies mandatory, or is it merely optional, and I'd have been marked successul even if I evac'ed as soon as I had the goods?

If so, I really wish I knew sooner, as I'd have been able to evac with a dead rookie and two wounded veterans. Not a great outcome, but not exactly a game stopped (though I'd probably have to stop all scanning to speed-heal at HQ, as my other veterans weren't in the best state either).

Often times there are multiple rewards for a mission. If the mission counters a dark event, only the key objective is required (e.g. destroy the device, etc.) to get a "win." Once you have accomplished that objective you can evac out for a partial sucess, but you won't get the secondary rewards (intel, supplies, soldier, etc.)
Every time you evac out without killing all the enemies you lose out on extra rewards. Mostly corpses you can use to disect or make gear with, as well as any soldiers gear you don't carry back that die.

Ah, okay. I probably would have acted the same knowing that then. It was three soldiers (two veterans) against a Sectoid. I didn't think it'd turn out quite that badly, even accounting for his acting at a distance through high cover.

generally my response to early game sectoids is to hit them with a blademaster sword attack.

seems to do additional damage to sectoids. usually kills them outright.

Yah... the mission before that my Ranger got surprise attacked by a Faceless. He was hiding behind a car. He did not stand a chance. Grenadier took a bad shot that mission as well, thus preventing me from from removing the Sectoids cover. And the Sectoid Mind-Controlled my Sniper, removing my chance to do high damage at a decently high hit-rate through cover.

The zombies just sealed the deal.

And it's listed as a failure - but it does stop the dark event.
