if that doesn't work verify cache.
if that doesn't work you probably can't run it on your system
I have the exact same problem and the above is the only way to fix it. Ive reinstalled both xcom and steam multiple times, tried with and without mods. repeatedly and run through the tutorial so many times it makes my eyes bleed. It crashes every single time at the exact same point.
Other than that I have 100s of hours in the game, with and without multiple mods and it runs fine.
thanks. if I already know how to play X-com, will skipping the tutorial be fine then?
Doing the tutorial affects your play through in a number of ways, but none of them are game breaking.
The first few missions that are "set pieces" and scripted will be different. IIRC with the tutorial you get to do a " retrieve a power core" misson that holds your had a little bit. Without its the standard "blow up the monument" mission.
You will miss a few cut scenes.
Your starting roster will be different. If you complete the tutorial your fist few deaths are scripted and your 100% guaranteed to have "Jane" as your first promotion. Without the tutorial your starting squad is random.
With the tutorial enabled your also restricted on what, where and when your first facility building choices are.
