As for an additional strategy, make sure you have the "Defense Matrix" built and staffed (not actually necessary) and make sure your other guys just stay put and defend the ramp entrance.
Order of operations is basically push out your scout/battle scanner in your immediate LZ towards the objective, kill the 1-2 nearby pods on like the next turn, push forward towards the objective killing most or all of the next pod as you move forward if you encounter it, destroy the objective, run your ass off back to the skyranger. You need to maintain 1-2 troops near the skyranger so the aliens don't get an easy win just walking onto the platform. You get 1 reinforcement fairly soon out of the skyranger, will be a random troop I believe (almost always ends up being one of my lowest level troops) so I think it pays to stick any spare modules you can afford to on weapons and any spare gear and just equip troops with them, even if they aren't on your initial squad. Once the objective is down you start getting enemy reinforcements every turn which gradually scale up in threat from like 3 bio troops of various types to eventually 3 advanced mecs dropping on overwatch, so you don't want to stick around.
Here's my screenshot at the end of the avenger defence. It's in russian, but I'm pretty sure you'll understand.

Early game this mission can be a complete nightmare. It really depends on the map you get. The worst I ever had was a flat bare desert with almost zero cover and beacon far away (4 full dashes) in a fenced yard behind a house. The best was me starting on an elevated ledge with beacon coming in sight of my ranger after a single dash. Took about 3 turns to take it out and leave.
Having a save before the defense and scumming for a favorable map might be your only real option...
I still think it's ♥♥♥♥ ass design to have unlimited enemys respawns in a turn based game, this isn't some RTS game.
"Infinite enemies in a turn based game unfair?"
What about the ADVENT Facility Sabotage missions, those have infinite reinforcements too, unless you Evac out of there.
Also wait til you get to the final room at End game :P
I'm not sure if your game is modded at all, but the Alien Facility sabotage missions do not have endless reinforcements in the vanilla game, there is a single group of reinforcements after you either clear the map of enemies or place the X4 charge. But unlimited, certainly not!
But yeah, the main thing to remember is avenger defense, unlike most missions, you don't need to kill all of the ayys to complete. They can't get on the skyranger, and you need to blow up the spike, that's it. Worst case scenario, you don't have to recover all of your troops either, you can send out 1 or 2 to finish it off if necessary and then leave them behind. Cold blooded, but the fate of the world is resting on your shoulders commander!
Unless you immediately Evac you'd get several waves, especially when the reinforcements Dark Event is active.
This is a pretty good strategy. Get a view on it and use your snipers to take it out. Then you don't have to get too close.
I can't take credit for the strategy though as others before me were the ones who came up with it.
Problem is, people like the OP are just too damn lazy to search before they post as this discussion was heavily discussed early on the game's life.
Well, I'm speaking in terms of zero dark events being active. I've stuck around a decent amount on these Sabotage missions before and I've only ever had 1 Dropship of reinforcements come.
Sure on the blacksite there are multiple waves if that's the mission you're referring to, but that & the forge are the only ones that I can think of that do this.
If you are slow you get a lot of enemies and upgrades, if you are fast enough you wont face nightmare with number of aliens, but lose opportunity to develop whole your team
