Avenger Defence - endless enemies?
Last night I had a mission where the Avennger was downed by a UFO and my ground forces had to destroy an object on the other side of the map, I tried 3 times to complete this mission but after 11 enemy re-inforements I lost. I can't get near the object any time I move, enemy re-enforcements show up every turn.

Never seen this before, is this normal??

- A mission where the enemy goes first and out numbers my squad 12 to 6.
- Endless enemy re-enforcements.
- Message re-enforcements are on the way every turn.
- Endless enemy respawns in a turn based game before, really?

I tried
- Mission multiple times.
- lowered the level from Veteran to Easy no difference.
- Reload a save game from a few days before this mission, no difference?
- Watched some youtube videos but did seen the same thing as I'm seeing (player had weapons/equipment I haven't seen in game yet, no object to destroy).

How the heck do I complete this mission?

If I remember from what I did I got a class that could make him self hidden after been seen and make him get all the way to the object and then have a sniper with a certain perk called squad sight I think and I just getting shooting the object with my sniper all the way back at the avenger :') it is a tough mission that's for sure !

Yep, Avenger defense is troublesome for a newbie but a well placed Sharpshooter with clear enough LoS (Line of Sight) aided by a concealed Ranger (either by "Phantom" or "Conceal") can easily get this mission done.

As for an additional strategy, make sure you have the "Defense Matrix" built and staffed (not actually necessary) and make sure your other guys just stay put and defend the ramp entrance.

This mission pays to be aggressive. You want a loadout with some long range explosives or a sniper, and at least 1 battle scanner or a troop who can start with stealth or choose to stealth so you can push them ahead as a scout, then fill it out with troops which can kill or damage as much in 3-4 turns of combat as you can get. in general, don't conserve abilities or explosives. If you are late in a campaign and have access to blaster launchers for example, you can basically launch 2 of those from across the map and blow up the objective and then just peace out, once you've located it. Things like rocket launchers that can fire beyond necessarily visual range work great.

Order of operations is basically push out your scout/battle scanner in your immediate LZ towards the objective, kill the 1-2 nearby pods on like the next turn, push forward towards the objective killing most or all of the next pod as you move forward if you encounter it, destroy the objective, run your ass off back to the skyranger. You need to maintain 1-2 troops near the skyranger so the aliens don't get an easy win just walking onto the platform. You get 1 reinforcement fairly soon out of the skyranger, will be a random troop I believe (almost always ends up being one of my lowest level troops) so I think it pays to stick any spare modules you can afford to on weapons and any spare gear and just equip troops with them, even if they aren't on your initial squad. Once the objective is down you start getting enemy reinforcements every turn which gradually scale up in threat from like 3 bio troops of various types to eventually 3 advanced mecs dropping on overwatch, so you don't want to stick around.

If this mission happens when you have tier 3 gear, it's nothing more than free XP for your soldiers.
Here's my screenshot at the end of the avenger defence. It's in russian, but I'm pretty sure you'll understand.

Actually it's better to have this mission trigger early on when you have fewer Alien races to deal with as this one gets really crazy annoying when Berserkers, Archons and Gate Keepers also come at you in droves... but then again something similar WILL crop up in the eventual future of every campaign *wink wink*

Definitely way easier in late game. You can easily take out enemies already present on the ground, especially if you got PsiOps with Dominate. You also get some backups from the ship and with Defense Matrix, up to 4 heavy turrets. Reinforcements die on touchdown.

Early game this mission can be a complete nightmare. It really depends on the map you get. The worst I ever had was a flat bare desert with almost zero cover and beacon far away (4 full dashes) in a fenced yard behind a house. The best was me starting on an elevated ledge with beacon coming in sight of my ranger after a single dash. Took about 3 turns to take it out and leave.

Having a save before the defense and scumming for a favorable map might be your only real option...

Well I finaly got it done but, had to go back a couple of older saved games, it played out a lot different, I got re-enforcements this time, the mission didn't start off 18 vs 6 and I didn't face enemy re-enforcement landings every single turn. I'm suprised a mission like this shows up 15 days in the campaign.

I still think it's ♥♥♥♥ ass design to have unlimited enemys respawns in a turn based game, this isn't some RTS game.

@Notoko:

"Infinite enemies in a turn based game unfair?"

What about the ADVENT Facility Sabotage missions, those have infinite reinforcements too, unless you Evac out of there.

Also wait til you get to the final room at End game :P

I'm not sure if your game is modded at all, but the Alien Facility sabotage missions do not have endless reinforcements in the vanilla game, there is a single group of reinforcements after you either clear the map of enemies or place the X4 charge. But unlimited, certainly not!

I seem to recall up to 3 waves of reinforcements on a facility sabotage mission, but it definitely wasn't infinite, and since they come in groups of 3 and you have 6 troops... I wish it had been infinite! $$$

But yeah, the main thing to remember is avenger defense, unlike most missions, you don't need to kill all of the ayys to complete. They can't get on the skyranger, and you need to blow up the spike, that's it. Worst case scenario, you don't have to recover all of your troops either, you can send out 1 or 2 to finish it off if necessary and then leave them behind. Cold blooded, but the fate of the world is resting on your shoulders commander!

Unless you immediately Evac you'd get several waves, especially when the reinforcements Dark Event is active.

This is a pretty good strategy. Get a view on it and use your snipers to take it out. Then you don't have to get too close.

I can't take credit for the strategy though as others before me were the ones who came up with it.

Problem is, people like the OP are just too damn lazy to search before they post as this discussion was heavily discussed early on the game's life.

Well, I'm speaking in terms of zero dark events being active. I've stuck around a decent amount on these Sabotage missions before and I've only ever had 1 Dropship of reinforcements come.

Sure on the blacksite there are multiple waves if that's the mission you're referring to, but that & the forge are the only ones that I can think of that do this.

This is normal, I killed 80 enemies and finished that mission with good upgrade for all my units

If you are slow you get a lot of enemies and upgrades, if you are fast enough you wont face nightmare with number of aliens, but lose opportunity to develop whole your team
