how does hidden potential work?

I want to try to get a ranger with serial because they are incredibly powerful. How can I go about doing that? So far I've had one ranger get a hidden p potential but it wasn't serial unfortunately. How does the mechanic work, what perks are available, what determines what perks classes can get, etc.

If you are talking LW2, HP has nothing to do with AWC perks. Also, i would suggest going to the dedicated subforum.
Anyway, there's no way to guarantee any of your rangers will get Serial at all.

Nope. Not LW2. Oh. Not hidden potential, I mean the bonus perk they get randomly after you get AWC. I think I found some info. Looks like it is random on any soldier after you get AWC. So I'll just need to power level as many rangers as I can and hopefully one gets it.

Yeah, it is random...there is a game file for it that you can take out some of the options if you don't want them. I took a few out of mine for ones that I never want. It is a shame for something as rare as a AWC skill trigger and then get a skill you don't like much.

also, there's a mod that lets you choose the awc perks. I don't like it, feels like cheating for me, but it is there.

You have to admit it is nice to have the option to choose instead of just being given a random one. You get to choose from 4 by default on legendary in A Better AWC and it is completely customizable. I reconfigured mine to 5/4/3/2 and that felt just right.

It works well with Retroactive AWC.
