battle brothers has good press, you might want to check it out.
How are those cRPGs anything close to the turn based strategy that's XCOM other than an isometric camera?
Blackguards have you play with a small squad and no permadeath punishment.
Final Fantasy Tactics is an oldie but goodie that has aged well.
Brigandine, an anime army tbs is one of my favorite games for ps1.
Haven't tried Pit People but seems like it's in the genre. Pretty whacky though.
Bloodbowl is a crazy fantasy bloody football game where you win by scoring but can also win by killing every opponent on sight. Love the cruuuuuunchy sound effects whenever I kill a dude.
The King's Bounty series is like xcom except that it's supposed to be an army simulator instead of a small squad. Basically play like xcom though.
Don't really know much without magic in their lore though I would highly suggest the King's Bounty series and Blackguards.
Final Fantasy Tactics and Brigandine if you have access to older games and consoles.
Also, there's Banner Saga 1 and 2. Again, sort of.
