Seriously though, I'm not sure. I love my little hacker units and always have at least one. Sometimes I'll level up two, one the healer route and the other the damage route.
Make sure you give them the skull jack for increased bonus to hacking. (Skull jack upgrade is useful too)
By the time those huge mechs start appearing I have my sharpshooter armed with bluescreen rounds so I can either shut down or attempt to control them bad boys.
Can't be totally sure about that but that's what I've heard
Before I started play ironman I noted difficulty randomly change even after first reload savegame in the middle of mission. And if hack is successful after all is another RNG story..
I personaly started to use hack plus MOD that slightly increase soldier hacking skill after each hack/attempt. Can be OP in very long run and long game (IF you manage keep that soldier alive.. not always true in ironman, heh) but I see it logical that soldier with 100 succssfuly hacked mechs use his experience for another hack and have better chance than totaly newbie that see mech first time on battlefield..
