Yes econ, the L hotkey is very useful in analysing the results of your attacks.
Probably just as useful is to press Control and left click on the unit you're about to attack to get a detailed breakdown of what's most likely to happen, rather than looking at the simple estimate.
This will remind you if an artillery unit will attack you first, show the all important initiative numbers which can be crucial to getting a good result, and also tell you the risk of a rugged defence, especially useful if you're attacking with armour.
Of course, after a while you tend to learn all this stuff, but it's very useful to check these details when you're new to the game until you become familiar with them.
