Anti-Tank vs Tank attack penalty
Initiative is what determines who shoots first and inflicts damage before the opponent does. High initiative is desirable because of that.

A random modifier of 0-2 is added to initiative, so it is not entirely predictable who attacks first.
This in addition to bonuses related to experience.

Usually it is terrain that limits initiative: There is no limit in open terrain, but forests, cities e.g. limit initiative greatly, making experience and just dumb luck of the roll more important than a high initiative.

But what is wrong with your tank destroyer or anti-tank gun? It has a higher initiative than the tank but when you attack, it always fires after the tank, usually getting mauled badly before being able to strike back.

Anti-tank units have an initiative penalty, IIRC -6, when ATTACKING enemy tank units. They are meant to be used DEFENSIVELY, so rather let the tanks attack you.

They retain their high initiative vs other targets, so feel free to use your Sturmgeschütz etc. to roll over enemy Infantry. :)

Thanks for posting these useful tips, they'll be very helpful for newbies to the game. Anyone who plays this without understanding the underlying game mechanics will be in for some nasty suprises, like when attacking heavily entrenched infantry in a city with artillery behind, with a seemingly powerful tank. :-)

These tips are excellent. I am learning more here than I have from playing the hundreds of hours I have racked up. :)

Yes, you really should consider writing some guides for this game Longasc.

I know most of this stuff already, because I'm one of those strange people who actually enjoys reading and memorising manuals, but there's often a few details I'll forget, so thanks for the reminders.

Longasc these are great. We should create a stick with a list of all your tips in. If you make the post I'll pin it then you can update it with links to all of your tips with a brief description of what the tip is for?

I must admit I am a bit too lazy for maintaining links on a forum, sorry! :)
But I already spotted a lot of contributors from the Slitherine/Matrix Forums here on Steam who also wrote many pieces of advice about mechanics or strategy there. They can and will contribute for sure, too.

Therefore I think Slitherine and the Panzer Corps team should maintain a sticky and link to the postings people make here. Or maybe one of the forum moderators. I am pretty sure if someone writes a major piece of advice they won't hesitate to contact a dev/mod here or on the official forums.

Steam has a built-in guides tab; just start one over there and copy-paste each of these threads into it as you make new ones. Then whenever you have the urge, you can go back later and add more or edit it or whatever. Surprisingly easy to use.

Thanks for this tip. I've never had any success using anti tank guns in Panzer Corps, which is a shame since historically the German '88 gun was very effective at destroying allied tanks. (like you say mostly when defending).

I followed Black Hammer's suggestion and re-uploaded the "Strategic Bombers" posting again as guide with 2 images. It seems to wait for some kind of admin approval. Let's see if it works I will post some more small guides.

@logi no worries, there are lots of scenarios where you can turn the flak horizontal and shoot more than enough tanks. Arras 1940 - where Rommel used the 8.8 for exactly that purpose - will give you 3 or 4 batteries that will have a lot to do. :)

It seems the guide just got released, nice!
