This is using the same engine as Rage and doesn't appear to have large open areas. Rage was a 21GB download so this will probably be around the same. We won't know for sure until the game becames available for pre-loading but I doubt it's going to be as large as a 50GB download. The game would be compressed for downloading and unpacked once complete, Steam downloads are typically much smaller than the installed size.
It's simple, really. The game takes up 41gb of hard drive space after it is installed, but it needs to actually install itself first. That accounts for the extra 9 GB required while it moves around and decompresses the different files and then cleans up the install after it is done.
I doubt the download is uncompressed as well, so I would guesstimate around a 30 gb download.
Wolfenstein: TNO was not that large of a download, even with the day 1 patch. It was slightly compressed, but not by much. I think it was around 30-35 gb if I recall correctly.
If the install size is actually 41GB then the actual download would be 41GB max or slightly smaller. I speculate given the information from similar games and the fact requirements have been mislabled the download size could weigh in at 30GB to 35GB. I'm trying to figure out where the gooses at Bethesda got 50GB download for a 41GB game unless as I said 50GB free hdd space is required to unpack the game. All we can do is speculate or go off likely inaccurate information provided by Bethesda reps but we'll know for sure within the next day.
Compression of the files has nothing to do with open areas, but moreso the number of files and the type of files. Textures tend not to compress as well as other file-types, hence the marginal difference between the download and the install size.
I don't know how many different textures this game will have and I don't think it will be a terribly long game that many different textures would need to be used. I was just saying it isn't going to be a 50GB download for a 41GB install and that the Steam download is usally smaller even if a GB or few less.
The more I think about it I cringe. The size of these games are atrocious when other games have high res textures that are incredibly detailed, realistic graphics, lush environments with download and install sizes far less than these gimmicky idtech5 games.
Additional Notes: It’s worth noting that the 50 GB of space required is for the PC install. When the installation is complete, the game will take up ~41 GB of HDD space
Why not just trust the official release notes and stop guessing? Makes no sense for me too but that's how it is.
I personally like idtech5. It is actually a good engine. The decision to only use uncompressed textures was something they wanted to do when they were first building it, but I can see why people don't like having to download a much larger install to accomodate it.
That is why I'm guesstimating at around 30-35gb download, based on the final size of 41gb (after install) and 50gb required (during installation.)
True. I suppose we'll find out soon why the game needs so much. Installed this game will be around double the install size for Rage.
Would be nice if preload started at midnight tonight just because myself and others are anxious to find out. Myself especially as I have to work around capped data due to living in an area without dsl, cable, fiber. Didn't buy a physical copy since I sold items on the Steam market to purchase this.
