^likely not totally correct. I'm sure at least 50GB free space on hdd is required with an installed size of 41GB. Steam download is likely going to be anwhere in the neighborhood of 15GB to 25GB.

This is using the same engine as Rage and doesn't appear to have large open areas. Rage was a 21GB download so this will probably be around the same. We won't know for sure until the game becames available for pre-loading but I doubt it's going to be as large as a 50GB download. The game would be compressed for downloading and unpacked once complete, Steam downloads are typically much smaller than the installed size.

You need to download 50GB, the installed files will take 41Gb of space. Source: Beth.Blog

Uh, I highly doubt you download 50gb for a 41gb install... What happened to the other 9 GB?

It's simple, really. The game takes up 41gb of hard drive space after it is installed, but it needs to actually install itself first. That accounts for the extra 9 GB required while it moves around and decompresses the different files and then cleans up the install after it is done.

I doubt the download is uncompressed as well, so I would guesstimate around a 30 gb download.

While you are normally right Wolfenstein the New Order (which also uses the Rage engine) was about 43 GB of which you had to download the entire thing. I suspect it will be the same for Evil Within.

Wolfenstein: TNO was not that large of a download, even with the day 1 patch. It was slightly compressed, but not by much. I think it was around 30-35 gb if I recall correctly.

^If that's the case I doubt 50GB will have to be downloaded for a 41GB install. Bethesda rep probably had it backwards. My Rage install is 21.2GB but the Steam download is 17.6GB. I don't see this being a game with large open areas or as big of a game as Rage is so it will probably compress better.

If the install size is actually 41GB then the actual download would be 41GB max or slightly smaller. I speculate given the information from similar games and the fact requirements have been mislabled the download size could weigh in at 30GB to 35GB. I'm trying to figure out where the gooses at Bethesda got 50GB download for a 41GB game unless as I said 50GB free hdd space is required to unpack the game. All we can do is speculate or go off likely inaccurate information provided by Bethesda reps but we'll know for sure within the next day.

Large open areas are in this game, but they shouldn't really affect file-size. The majority of the size of the game seems to be the textures, as it was with both RAGE and Wolfenstein: TNO.
Compression of the files has nothing to do with open areas, but moreso the number of files and the type of files. Textures tend not to compress as well as other file-types, hence the marginal difference between the download and the install size.

^ But larger areas need more textures if they want to detail those areas differently and can't re-use textures. The Wasteland in Rage is huge or at least much larger than the areas that will be in this game. There's also more open areas in Rage from what I could tell.

I don't know how many different textures this game will have and I don't think it will be a terribly long game that many different textures would need to be used. I was just saying it isn't going to be a 50GB download for a 41GB install and that the Steam download is usally smaller even if a GB or few less.

The more I think about it I cringe. The size of these games are atrocious when other games have high res textures that are incredibly detailed, realistic graphics, lush environments with download and install sizes far less than these gimmicky idtech5 games.

Additional Notes: It’s worth noting that the 50 GB of space required is for the PC install. When the installation is complete, the game will take up ~41 GB of HDD space

Why not just trust the official release notes and stop guessing? Makes no sense for me too but that's how it is.

The same could be said about small areas; if they want each corridor to have a unique look it would still take more textures.
I personally like idtech5. It is actually a good engine. The decision to only use uncompressed textures was something they wanted to do when they were first building it, but I can see why people don't like having to download a much larger install to accomodate it.

The game takes 50gb to INSTALL. Not to download. There is a world of difference, and my explanation as to why it takes an additional 9 GB to install accounts for this.

Well... it will have something around 30 to 50 GB ... what ever?

Yeah, we can only give estimates on the download size, but since that's what the OP was asking for, that's the best we can do. We do know that it won't take 50gb to download, because that would require EVEN MORE space to install (50 gb download + whatever space is taken up during the install process.) We also know that there will be SOME level of compression for the download, so we know it will be less than the total install size (41 gb.)
That is why I'm guesstimating at around 30-35gb download, based on the final size of 41gb (after install) and 50gb required (during installation.)

True. I suppose we'll find out soon why the game needs so much. Installed this game will be around double the install size for Rage.

Would be nice if preload started at midnight tonight just because myself and others are anxious to find out. Myself especially as I have to work around capped data due to living in an area without dsl, cable, fiber. Didn't buy a physical copy since I sold items on the Steam market to purchase this.
