Need help guys
Hey guys,

I have a Cyberpower PC
i7 4770k
8GB RAM
2TB Hard Drive
XFX R9290X 8GB
Windows 10 64bit

I have my computer hooked up to my HDTV with a hdmi to vga cable. I recently purchased this game. On my tv when I switch to inputs (cable tv, antenna, PC) I receive a blue screen and then the screen goes to whatever device input I select. Anyway I cannot play this game for the life of me. Actually a few other games I cannot play as well such as Legos Jurassic World and a few others while most of my other games play correctly.

When I go to start "The Evil Within" on Steam the game appears to launch but then it just hangs on the blue screen with no sound...just a blue screen.

I have the latest driver (15.8 Beta) for my video card and the video card (brand new) was installed by a technician at the computer shop I go to and like I said it does play other games. So I don`t believe it was installed incorrectly.

I have tried several things like:

Older video drivers
Running the game as admin and running Windows 7 and 8 compatible modes
disabling video graphic enhancement properties for the game
I don`t have any anti virus software and I turned off my firewall

I don`t want to RMA my video card because I spent like $400 on it and like I said I don`t think it`s the video card.

I don`t want to do a system restore or go back to Windows 8.1. or Windows 7.

Any ideas?

Many Thanks!

Doubt its a videocard issue, idtech 5 games in my experience are tempermental with non-conventional display setups. Is your computer only hooked to the TV or is it also hooked to a monitor?

Also don't turn off your firewall, thats a huge risk and this game has nothing to do with that. The issue lies with either a settings conflict, config issue, or the tempermentalness of the game.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, my tv is only hooked up to the computer. My tv is 1080 and has HDMI, but for some reason the HDMI inputs on my video card don't seem to want to connect to them. So I just used a HDMI from tv to VGA cable to the VGA input for the monitor on the back of my computer. One more thing, I use the cataylist control program for my video card and it say`s a few games are not optimized.
I just now actually was able to connect a HDMI cable to the computer. So HDMI to tv and HDMI to the back of the computer`s video card HDMI input. Still not working.

I also have a high quality 1000 watt psu that was professionally installed as well.

Try launching the game while in Big Picture mode?

When you say bluescreen, are you talking about an actual BSOD or literally just a blue image on your HDTV?

I just did a fresh install of Windows 7. I am having the same problem.

@iLLcAtTiViSsiMo: It`s a blue image on my HDTV. What`s interesting is now when the blue image comes on I keep going to different inputs on the tv and I go back to the PC input again and I see the Evil Within game on screen but only for 1 second and then it goes back to the blue image. I will try launching the game in Big Picture mode.
Still not working, what I might do tommorrow is I might hook my PC monitor up and see if that works.

I laughed a little while reading your posts. No offense though. But are you using an actual "TV" or a actual computer monitor? Because you mention TV & Monitor? Almost every GPU I've used only have mini HDMI connection on the card. You'd need a mini HDMI adapter to use HDMI which is what I'd recommend instead of VGA. Most TV's have display ports, but i doubt your TV does. Also make sure you have the right input on your TV selected.

Try rolling back on drivers and not use the (beta) drivers. Beta drivers are just that "beta" there for testing purposes really. Most don't have problems with them, but i never use them. I use to have my old rig connected to a TV with no issues at all. But i play on a monitor now though.

Are you able to even get on your desktop? I'm sure you are but you didn't mention it. So basically you only get a blue screen when you launch the game?
@Rabbit: I have mentioned I use an actual HDTV TV. It didn`t work with that or my PC monitor, when I tried that also. I have everything hooked up corectly. Still get a blank blue screen. I think it`s the video card or my computer doesn`t work with AMD products. I`m getting a GTX 970 tommorrow. I heard AMD video cards are not as reliable as GTX. Not trying to start a AMD / GTX debate here but IMO I have had better luck with GTX.

Yes, I can get on my desktop. When I launch the game the screen goes to black to blue. The power is still on the computer. When I hit the power button to shut the computer off it shows an icon of the game and an icon of Steam both in the running programs task box. Then the computer shuts down. I`m more ttechnologically inclined than I might sound. Sorry if my gibber jabber is confusing.

Let us know how that goes! I had the same problem with saints row 4 and had to reinstall a total of 4 times and messa round in the local files settings and it desided to work.
Could just be a bad card. I've had my 7970 forever now. She still runs like a champ.
Hey guys,

Well I took out the R9 290X XFX 8GB video card and I installed a GTX 970 SSC 4GB card into the computer and I am still just getting a blank screen. The funny thing is I have another computer it`s a Dell i7 4790 XPS8700 in the kitchen. It has a GTX 745 4GB video card and it plays The Evil Within just fine. So I bought a 25ft HDMI to HDMI cable and plug it into my Dell PC to my HDTV tv and it works that way. I still don`t understand why it does not play the game on my Cyberpower PC. But at least I can still play the game on my other PC. Again, I just wish I knew why I couldn`t on my Cyberpower PC. I guess that may remain an unsolved mystery. Thanks guys for helping me with your suggestions. I appreciate it. :)

Check the dpi/scaling settings on the Cyberpower rig. http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/The_Evil_Within#Game_is_oddly_zoomed_or_cropped

Also check the graphic driver control panel's scaling settings. It is possible it is a scaling/resolution issue. Depending on the configuration it may be rendering something your TV isn't capable of displaying.

sounds like to me the game is playing at a higher resolution than the tv can handle
Hey guys,

I finally figured out the problem. I was using a HDMI switcher hub and I had my PC hooked up to one of the inputs on the hub.

So I removed the HDMI switcher hub and just plugged the PC into a HDMI input on the back of my tv and BOOM...the game now works.

Not sure if anyone else uses a HDMI switcher hub but I notice while I am using a input while using the hub, my tv screen goes black for a few seconds and then the screen returns back to what I was watching on it. Has anyone else experienced problems using a ac powered HDMI hub?

I think the problem is lag.
