It's pretty easy to get him to the agro stage via stealth, by just hiding behind a pillar, and shooting the extended eyeball with the pistol (which stuns and blinds him), then shooting the human part of him that sticks up when he's slumped over with a harpoon. It's easy to hit the eyeball when it stops moving.
It takes roughly 3-5 times doing this, depending what difficulty mode and upgrades you have. It's best to set a Shock trap somewhere near where you're hiding, because it can be hard to tell when he's going to go agro, but he'll generally smash the pillar you're behind when he does.
The Shock bolt should buy you time to run toward the hallway connecting the two areas, especially if you've upgraded it, but go into weapon selection mode and switch to explosive bolts on the way there. Set a few explosive bolt traps in the hallway near the explosive barrels, but string them apart so they reach the center of the hallway. Angle them back so he hits the one in the center of the hallway first. That way he'll be close to the barrels when they explode.
There are two more explosive barrels you can use after turning right into the next area that are just beyond a car. You can run past them and shoot them with the pistol when he gets near the car, or string more explosive bolt traps toward them. The pistol method takes timing, as one barrel will explode after the other.
If done properly you shouldn't have to run into one of the side rooms, which is only futile because he'll always find you, and eventually grab and severely injure you bashing you into the wall. I did it using this method on Nightmare and Akumu, with fresh starts. I also did it on Survival with no upgrades.
I just hate the instadeaths.
