Stuttering Fix
Hi,
So I had some weird stuttering, even if my fps counter was 60fps locked... I've tried EVERYTHING I could with NVCP and NVI, nothing....
So I tried the same fix I used with TEW2, opened Nvidia inspector, locked the framerate at 60.7fps and guess what?
The game is now PERFECT! no more stuttering, it's a beautiful 60fps locked!
So for those who still have stuttering in TEW, try this fix, I'm sure it could help some of you.
And also, TEW best game ever! (1st one, not the 2nd of course!)

I have to ask what build version of the game you're running. Less than 2 months after release, the PC version got a patch that added a 60 FPS frame lock, along with a toggle to turn off letterbox and play it full screen.

I assume since you're talking about it on Steam, you got it on Steam, and got that free update. I really don't see how going from a 60 FPS frame lock in game settings to adding a frame rate limit higher than that in NI could even be possible, let alone produce better results.

Did you first set Vertical sync in NI to "Force off"? I ask because since that update, you have only two options in the game settings for frame lock, 30, or 60. there is no Off setting. I also ask because I've read that even when people use the r_swapinterval 0 command to unlock frame rate, an FPS counter will still read 60 FPS average. That is because the game was not designed to work above 60 FPS. The developers have even warned that any bugs that occur above 60 FPS are not supported.

This actually has fixed it for me. As suggested using NVI and setting framerate lock to 60.7 along with r_swapinterval 0 in the games config file has worked. Last time I played this I could never solve this stutter issue.

But today I can finally enjoy The Evil Within. Thanks OP.

So I'm using the latest build of The Evil Within on steam. Whatever you have set in game for the framrate (30/60fps lock) it doesn't matter because when you set r_swapinterval 0 it shows as 30 fps lock in the game menu even though you actually have uncapped framrate. All you have to do is set r_swapinterval 0 and use Nvidia Inspector to edit The Evil Within profile and simply change the framerate limiter to 60.7fps. When you run the game now the game with be at a locked 60fps regardless of what the menus say (30fps). I would completely disregard and ignore that setting in the game and not play around with it once you have set r_swapinterval 0 and capped the framrate with NVI. Here is a picture of my settings in NVI. Everything is default except framerate imiter.

Thank you, 10 million times for this. It works perfectly, and took all of 2 minutes to adjust everything and start playing at a buttery smooth 60fps. It's pretty damn sad that the devs couldn't official fix this. It probably would've taken them, all of, five minutes. I recall this game running pretty smoothly when I first got it and then somewhere along the line, a patch f*cked it up. It's a shame, too, because this game looks so freakin good when it's running properly.

I play in 30 FPS(And with letterbox) and for me it has less stuttering compare to 60. But I have to try this method.

A pleasure, TEW imo is a masterpiece, it diserves to be played in the best conditions! ;-)
I locked it at 55FPS, works like a charm now.

That's interesting ... According to MSI Afterburner, TEW runs at 120 FPS (monitor frequency) although 60 FPS Framelock is enabled...

Doing this, did the magic for me. Thanks!

Thx for the fix, r_swapinterval 0 did it for me and removed the stutter.
tried the frame rate limiter in the amd driver panel but did nothing, fps ran up to 85 ish, in menu even 2000...
using rivatuners fps limiter on 61 to prevent any weird issues with fps related coding, wich i am sure this primitive coded and badly optimized game uses.

I knew about this method, but for some reason it no longer works. What happened? :steamsad:

Doesn't work now because of broken updates for NVidia Inspector
So I searched the internet for a fix on AMD GPUs and of course everything I found so far was using Nivida GPUs and Software.

What I did now to fix it, the game runs in 50-60fps right now, I am in the very beginning, was going to C:\Users\USERNAME\Saved Games\TangoGameworks\The Evil Within\base, opened the .cfg file and set r_swapinterval to 0. I play with Xbox Game Pass, so it might be that the steam version has the file somewhere else, but it shouldn't be a problem to find it.

I have a RX 5700 GPU, and it runs smoothly with everything on max settings and without the letterbox.
I hope it helps someone when googling for the issue, as I found threads like these that only showed a solution for Nvidia GPUs.

EDIT: I entered the building and Xbox Gamebar shows 100+ fps (I have a 75hz Monitor). So I guess it will run smoothly all the way through. If something changes, I'll edit this post.)
