Plus the double barrel ends up being weaker due to not being upgradable, and it blows through ammo too fast.
As far as whether it's needed, that depends entirely on player skill and adaptability. Once you know the game well it's not needed at all. There are many people playing on Akumu with no upgrades on the stock game, and some with no keys as well.
If you redeem the DLC code you will have those items show up in your inventory and won't be able to dispose of them. There are also problems even if you try to avoid using them.
Like I said, the double barrel shotgun keeps reappearing in your weapon slot even if you switch to the regular shotgun, which means you have to take time that won't necessarily be afforded to switch back while in game.
Plus having two more crossbow bolt types in your agony ammo rotation means taking valuable time to cycle past them to select other bolts. The poison bolt is also mostly useless.
The annoying thing is, when learning how to play the game, the medkit, gel, and incendiary bolts can be very useful, but the shotgun and poison bolts are more of a hindrance. So I would say avoid redeeming it.
I did that yesterday because it took longer to cycle through my bolts and I kept accidentally killing myself with the fire bolts when I thought I had regular bolts equipped.
