It depends on your build, at the moment I'm using the Fleshripper greatsword along with the armor, and the Jar helmet and some other different pieces for some bonuses.
And as for tiers themselves, they go like this:
- Common (Grey)
- Uncommon (Blue)
- Rare (Purple)
- Unique (Pink)
- Epic (Orange)
- Legendary (Gold)
Uncommon gear has 1 random attribute
Rare gear has 2 random attributes
Unique gear has 3 random attributes
Epic gear has 3 random attributes + 1 fixed
Legendary gear has 3 random attributes + 2 fixed
If you're looking for a full set, Fugitive Mage Set is arguably the most powerful one on your first playthrough. Boosts both Armor Breaker and Heart Piecer, which you'll be doing a lot anyway, and grants Heart Piercer counterattack properties. Additional bonuses to Guard Stamina DMG Decrease make it so it pairs well with Maximillian.
Chaos-Ridden Set would be a runner-up, thanks to all kinds of buffs from performing Brink Guards. And the skill you get from it - Volcanic Wrath - is positively busted. Consumes 5 Spirit/Fury, sure, but the damage is absolutely cracked.
Other than that, Fleshripper Set and Crimson Fiend Set are also good choices. The latter gets even better on Epic tier - Sentinel's Greatsword gets a fixed attribute in the form of "Mortal Blow: Murderous", which removes charge time from Mortal Blow: Bloodshed completely if chained after Savage Momentum, and drastically decreases charge time on Limit Break if chained after Bloodshed.
Thing's crazy, lemme tell you.
