Elegy of the soul : Bad game design
Throughougly enjoying the game but who on EARTH came up with letting this elegy of the Soul have a ONE SHOT ABILITY which he uses on the first turn of battle IF you have REPEL GEAR EQUIPED ?! What kind of game design is this?

As always i went to the taverns for info but there wasnt any.
i literally had to GOOGLE to figure out why it kept nuking me on turn 1 LOL.
That should not be necessary (naturally i had equipped Heismay with the high evasion repel electricity boots since he was serving as my 'royal dodger' in boss fights. He is never in my dungeon clear squads but he is very nice for those dragon fights)

After that was unequipped sure enough he stopped doing it and the fight was very easy on hard. I got creamed by the first dragon going in blind and had to grind to get Heismay to Royal Thief lvl 20 after which it was easy. This fight wasnt hard after. I got spoiled (obviously i had to read on the fight which i prefer not to do) that it will do the OHKO move when it goes to prince archetype when his health got low so i used the Prince turn icon boost. Used Heismay and Hulkenberg to lower the defense as much as possible while +2 or 3 Strohl knocked out 2 Severe moves with Utility Charm and killed it...

Its a good thing the internet exists cause i can see a lot of players rage quitting over it OHKOing you time and again and the player cant possibly have a clue why. Or did i miss something glaringly obvious? Weird game design.

ah ok i still have to play PS3... I dont like mechanics like that esp if the player is not warned about it. If you are warned its kinda fine...

Yea, I feel like nowadays game developers have some kind of deal with the people who create guides online.

"You advertise our game and we'll add random, unexplained nonsense to our game that forces people to use online guides."

Seriously, nowadays you miss out on like 60% of a games content if you're not following some step by step guide your whole playthrough.

That's pretty standard for SMT franchise. I understand if you're completely new to the franchise, this might put you off, but obviously it's put there so you don't completely cheese the fight.
It has to have a modicum of a challenge to it, no?

The problem isn't really that the mechanic exists, it's that it's not explained in the game.

Unless you look online you have no way to know why you're getting 1HKOd. The fight just seems unwinnable.

Yeah thats the entire point. There is no way this is telegraphed in any way shape or form to the player. I dont WANT to HAVE to look online to win a fight. The informants at the tavern were working great for the rest of the game! They should have given you some form of info. Have the fairy say something or what not.

funny how are players cheesing the fight? Seems to me the AI is cheesing it with a OHKO move LOL

If you make enough of the Sublime Spoonful food you can basically give yourself infinite actions and kill the dragon before it can even attack.

I dont see how its cheesing just using high damage moves.
I had little trouble beating it when i unequipped the repel stuff.

A lot of the insane damage strats involve abusing the retry option until you get a crit. Pretty cheesy, imo.

New to megaten games huh? Sorry to say, but megaten superboses require you to "cheese" the bosses in one way or the other because superbosses do not operate according to the "rulebook" of the game.

With very few exceptions to the rule, like Demifiend, most of megaten superbosses are damage and build checks.

Hmm i played P4 and 5 before i cant recall any such bosses like this that just one shot nuke you at all. There were some rough bosses in 4 and 5 too but they did not 'cheat' like this. There was some manager (?) 3rd dungeon (?) in 5 iirc which was rough too. 4 had a tough one too early game. All in all most of these games are fairly doable even on hardest level.

Just finished great game. This just didnt make sense. If there was anything in game to inform the player it would have been fine. Luckily we got google LOL.

I have never 'retried' for crit. you mean the 'go back' option or 'retry' option no never used it.

Also, subverting one's expectations is fun. Remembering the first time I fought Yunalesca in FFX. Hellbiter lolz.
