As for whether or not it's a contender for GotY, I'd be more likely to dismiss it for its very plain and frankly boring writing rather than the game mechanics themselves.
Seeing "The day of our hero draws near , blah ,blah, blah...." a few thousand times started to break something in my soul. Lol.
The damn deadlines with the calendar system make you feel kind of flustered at times to get things done quickly rather than actually chill and enjoy the game. But, I got used to it pretty fast and realized it wasn't all that drastic or chaotic.
And on a similar note, they do deserve credit for making side-quests not QUITE feel so weird. In most games, it feels like "oh, I know you're on your way to stop the inevitable end of the world from the evil magic zombie god, but can you go collect three flowers and a lizard skin for me. I'm busy shoving my finger in my ass and can't dare do it myself."
This game, with the calendar system, and teh explanation for the days you have to get it done, at least makes the time to side quest -make sense-.
GoTY isn't about the quality of a game, though; it's about checking very specific boxes. This game wasn't contentious enough to spark a ton of drama between the warring factions in the gaming industry, so it won't get much attention. Nowadays the people voting aren't the people who enjoy video games; it's the people who have an agenda to push.

Can anyone seriously look at the above list and think they know what's best? Especially the big outlets like IGN, PC gamer etc. The only thing they're missing to complete the circus is Kotaku.
