I love, love, love, Persona. But I can't get into this game...
The story feels shallow, the characters just exposition at you about who they are rather than showing who they are, and thematically it's all just very black and white: this guy bad so okay to hate him! Justice! Save dying best friend! Kick the puppy to get the audience engaged.

Doesn't feel anything like the subtle personal journey each character has in in the persona games. Stories about Trauma and acceptance, about not identifying with a gender or confusion about sexuality, stories about rebelling against real injustices that many of us have actually experienced in the world like sexual harrasment or depression or friend trying to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ commit suicide. Not just mister super duper evil man who burned down my village so I must get justice.

There also isn't a lick of humor. The Persona games are FUNNY! And CHARMING! ARGhhhh. I am about ten hours in and just haven't felt a damned thing.

You can say that just cuz its fantasy but there are plenty of fantasy that have deeper narratives that are less black and white.

That game looks like Persona, but it is not Persona.

Duh, it is called Metaphor, not Persona.

i mean yes, if you reduce everything down to their core parts it always looks shallow:

p5: bald man is murdering people, now meet your jock friend and lover arcana

p4:cop is murdering people, now meet your homophobic friend, and your jock/priest arcana.

it is, generally, okay to hate the bad guy, they are, obviously, in the wrong more often then not.

the nuance comes from how basically every arc of the game you are discussing how life could be better, and everyone has this own specific way to do it, and the clashing of ideas is how you get anywhere, sometimes literally.

Also the feeling of not being treated as a human due to being an Asian feels more real than muh gender acceptance.

if you reduce it to this level, i could pretty confidently argue that you're talking about persona 5.

bad man's ruining everybody's life! everybody hate him! best friend expositions at you about how he ruined his life so you hate him more! get justice on this bad, bad man!

girl is being sexually abused to get the audience engaged! i want a story with deeper themes, not just bad man is diddling soembody's best friend and broke this other dude's knee! i want a story where actual large injustices are addressed, like if somebody's village is missiled into the ground for political reasons!

see?

And a good thing it isn't, I never could get into Persona due to all the stupid stuff you just mentioned. Some of us just want to slay dragons and save villages man, we could not care less about teen pathos and Gen Z crying about 1st world problems.

I concur.

Weird, because it's basically Persona, but better.

Whatever game you played that matches this description, it is not this game.

This is too high effort to be bait. This man might actually believe what he is saying.

But Yosuke is canon gay though. He says to your face that he wants to be with and acknowledged by you. :mtp_gallica:

How many of the bonds have you done?

I agree in the sense that I'm having a hard time getting invested due to the complete absence of characters or charm.

I'm not saying every game needs to take place in a high school and have a beach episode, but literally any reason to care about these people or what's going on in general would be nice. So far it's just been an endless barrage of chores and FOMO with our only motivation being "Louis bad."

But not even BAD bad, just like, "I'm better than you and I'll kill you" bad...
Frostbeast Oct 14, 2024 @ 11:52pm
It has a slow start. But has some nice twists towards the end.
