The update itself is 1.4 Gb, the reason you're seeing 91 is because the game's size of installation increases to 91 Gb after it.

It seems to be repackaging the whole game during the installation, so if you have less than 85 Gb of free space (or however much space the game was taking before), then you will be getting this error.

For whatever reason, the devs designed this patch to recompile the entire game after the update. Steam knows this and requires you to have 91GB free so the game can recompile.

No, this is not the best way to apply an update. And no, I do not know why it was done this way.

Goodluck freeing diskspace. If you are having trouble there is some freeware on the internet called Spacemonger. I use it for times like this.

Wow, this is dumb.
wow, this is the the dumbest thing i have ever seen.

This is the way Steam updates now, Wukong update is also similar, except that game is much bigger.

Your download was 1.4 GB. Then it patches every single change into the game. Literally 100s to 1000s of them then reinstalls the changed files. Get use to it. Updates are no longer complete files .Steam uses a patcher now. A small patch file can take alot of time Less strain on Steam servers. Much smaller files. Way more strain and time for the user.

Not dumb at all. Steam now has very small update files. Way less strain on there servers. More time on your end but that is no skin off Steams back. From the time it finishes your download ,,less than a minute. Steam Server has no more work to do. The rest is just the patcher which is part of your Steam files doing its job locally. All your PC.

The game has yet more stupid coding in that most of the entire game is in a single 84gb file

So any small update means checking and rewriting an entire 84gb

Solution. Split the game intosny 5 or 10gb files

Sorry but the patcher is a Steam thing now and how they update games. Not a this game thing.

The problem is that all the game's data is in a single 85 GB file. So even if the patch is very small, modifying that files requires rewritting it entirely (this is a safe feature so if something goes wrong Steam can revert back to the original file). Many modern games do this (packaging the entire data files into a big file), which is an SSD killer when patching those files. Devs should stop doing this.

They could solve it by not having the entire game files in a single file

Split it up into multiple smaller files, even 5gb chunks would do

This patch, if chunked into 5gb, would not need to rewrite 80+gb

sooooooo i deinstall the game and download it again, patched, because everything else i have to reinstall if i free my disk space...?
