And the reason I like iRacing is because of the iRating and Saftey Rating systems. Every time I play other games online, people just ram their way to the front.
Also the pricing on the content in the OP is a straight up lie. A track doesn't cost £20?
£20 = ~$30, a track is $15 and a car is $12.
As a longtime member I'm not really spending much money anymore so I'm not afraid to "lose my investment" when I say that iRacing is still the best simulator out there. To be honest I haven't raced much when the new tire model came out first (also due to university stuff) and you have probably heared some horror stories about it but they make really good progress now. The last months I raced the Skip Barber racecar and had some of the best/most thrilling races of my life. Now I moved on to the Star Mazda (I allready have an A4.99 licence) and having a great time.
Very important: Please don't see iRacing as a game (yes, you still sit at your computer playing... that's not what I mean) but see it as a platform for virtual motorsport. With that mindset you can much more out of iRacing when you use it and also decide in the first place if this is a sim for you.
It's not a game... it's a hobby ;). Welcome everybody who wants to join us! :)
BTW:
a) car = 11.95 $
b) track = 11.95 $ or 14.95 $ (depending on size)
c) True, iRacing has a huge collection of oval-racing-content but I'm not even sure if we allready have more road-racing-stuff than oval-racing. Some new road content coming in the future will be the Aston Martin GT3 racecar, the DBR9 scream maching (:D), Monza, Imola and late 2015 the Nürburgring including the Nordschleife.
Most people also end up being part of leagues within iracing which are very much like subcommunities within the iracing community. League racing makes up for many of the shortcomings that official series simply cannot provide by the nature of the sim.
Do other games have better graphics and damage models? Sure. It would be kick-ass for iracing to have the damage modelling of Wreckfest, but impractical.
Do other racing games have better online communities? I doubt it.
Do other games provide racing simulation better? I doubt it. Other games will allow you to race, bang and crash your way to the front, but iracing attempts to be a simulation of racing, not a game.
My suggestion would be that if you want to approach iracing as one would games like Forza, GT6, Project Cars, RF2, etc. then iracing may not be for you.
Don't get me wrong. There are shortcomings in iracing. Every piece of software will have them. What you have to ask yourself is, what do you want from the game?
Looking at your stats, this isn't for you. You need something where you can "reset" every 2-3 laps buddy.
You can get 3 months free if you use the promo code PR-NURBURGRINGEXPO via the Iracing website (iracing.com). can't make it any cheaper then free.. sorry :P
Other then that, yeah. its an expesive title, but well worth the money according to many. And there are already enough tips and tricks to keep cost to a minimum on this board. I personaly only pay around 50euro a year now. Cheaper then any typical MMO subscription.
As mentioned before. Don't look at it as a game but rather as a platform for your hobby (like your Tennis club for example). It's expensive for a game but cheap for a hobby.
But here goes my comments will be directed to the 1st post ...
Expense of Iracing ?
` If you don't want to play then don't. is IR expensive to some people yes, is it cheap to some yes. It is all what you like.
RF2 headaches -
` Rfactor 2 has a payment plan as well... 43.99 plus 12$ a year. Or $85 dollars. All of this you pay to be annoyed and aggravated on a daily basis with download sites, the way it handles hosting and all around ease of use. Just the aggravation and non user friendlyness of RF2 would drive the normal pc user to go buy iracing yet the new people to the hobby.
Iracing is one maybe two clicks so easy a monkey can be installed and racingin about 5 minutes or less.
PCARS - everone should have a copy when it comes out ...
` PCARS (I am pretty heavy into pcars and this is not my only steam account) I beleive in thier product but.. there is alot of un knowns not to mention no valid oval racing yet. As of now IR has a better track list then Pcars imo for the sim racer who does not mind paying. That may change down the road. (no pun intended)
` AC (game i also own) this game may have been released but still feels like a beta test. Has great potential and also support of mod community it seems. But this game has a long long way before it is mentioned in same breath as IR for stability, amount of cars on tracks, and multiplayer racing.
While I may have issues with IR, and in the past disputes with IR's human aspect of the way things are done. I always have felt IR is the most user friendly sim race software there is. That in it self is a HUGE plus and has great worth to the race hobby masses.
Nascar 2002, and N2k3 would have 8,000 to 10,000 users on at any given time day. Most Nascar pappy racers would have gladly forked over 75$ every year to have there main hobby game updated just like madden does for ea. But the football like stiff arm felt by the community was what hurt IR.
IR today says it mis judged how many sim racers there is in the world. No IR staff and management misjudged there own community (papy community / GPL / N2002 / 2003 ) . Many people, community leaders of web sites who sold and promoted the product for years who felt left out, insulted, or threatened by IR gave up, and with them went there communities, lost into other games or just retired there wheels into closets or tag sales.
If the n2003 community had not been treated with more diplomatic communications IR today would have been much different then it is now. The pappy community alone could have easily carried IR in population of 10,000 plus online at any time of day. Imagine is IR had that 10k online as a base to start with.
Matchmaking and splits would be so much closer and competitive. I can only dream of what it would have been, this conversation would have been laughable.
With all that said IR is more costly yes, but is a better product in so many ways. The original poster ... all the titles you named are not even as good as nascar 2003 yet iracing, in my opinion. Go play Redline's GTP mod for nascar 2003, to this day it blows away any thing in rfactor or rf2. Not even close.
Iracing software is getting better ..I took almost 2 years off and I am impressed with the improvements. Too many to list.
I wish IR good luck on steam.
If you are having fun with Assetto Corsa. Good for you. iRacing is about racing other people. Practicing hours till you come close to the best times and are able to drive on that level for a whole race distance. It is no coincidence real life pro racers use this service.
Only then will the gamer become a simracer and will see the value in a service that gives you something noone else can.
